  • Unless I’m mistaken we have one Giraffe 40, which has a range of 40km. The GM200 claims an engagement range of 100km and a detection range of 250. We don’t have a medium- range radar, we have a short range radar.

The single Giraffe 40 was retired a number of years ago and replaced by a number of Giraffe Mk4’s

        Engage with what?
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

          • I love the way everyone goes full nerd on what a system can or cannot do rather than the fact one of the poorest countries in Europe is getting a modern medium range radar system.

As for the discussion on engagement range that is referring to the ability of the system to support the command of effectors out to that range.

              • Indeed. Moldova has a GDP that’s likely rivaled by Limerick, but they will have medium radar while we, I suspect, will have nothing that’s actually operational that isn’t on a ship for many years.

Moldova has the incentive of Transnistria and Russian interference to make it buy modern radar. They are probably buying other Western materials as well. Our Govt is ignoring the "incentive" of Russian Bears, the threat to our subsea cables, the manpower crisis, the subpar payscales and all the other factors.

In truth, for the past four years my growing certainty is that the government will be blinking at the chief of staff one fine day soon when he informs that there are no longer any operational units, nor the cadre who can train recruits. At which point Micheál Martin ( because that day is soon) will say “but sure there’s still you, what’s the fuss?”
While the department secures funding for a new commission.
Will they go for another mobile - and so part-time and for contingencies - unit like Giraffe or establish a permanent radar site (of course there will be only one radar purchased) somewhere like Shannon? That’s the height of my hopeful speculation.

                    • Would even Government know if there was no EAS helicopter, no EOD team available for a call out, no GoH For the President, no AD deployment for a VVIP visit etc?

it is across Government, there are very very few Ministers who are on top of their brief, they will only take notice when they get it in the neck directly from their direct constituents.

                        • 2nd shipment flown in this year (that we know of).
Any sign of primary radar yet?

                          • Well if it is flying into Weston it’s more than likely passed through at least 1 Irish radar’s coverage

as I understand it, it is in Class C Airspace which means ATC clearance is required (from Dublin Airport)

But if the Defence Forces are able to cover those roles, nobody will notice (or care) if they are unable to do anything else. You have summarised what is perceived to be the core function of the DF!
'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
                              Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

Yes, I'm sure the Pilot in charge filed a flight plan that stated his cargo was €8 Million worth of Heroin.
It was the year of fire...the year of destruction...the year we took back what was ours.
It was the year of rebirth...the year of great sadness...the year of pain...and the year of joy.
It was a new age...It was the end of history.
It was the year everything changed.
