    • Pat Kenny Newstalk just had an interesting chat with Retired Lt Col Kevin Byrne (formerly Silver Swallows) about what we have, what we can do at present, what is needed and what it will cost.
Not bad, as discussions go, for Joe Public.

      • Very interesting. It's a good thing he didn't hide from the cost question, which is the real barrier to the general public accepting the idea of interceptors.

Leonardo were touting the M-346FA to the Commission I believe

        • If that's the Kevin Byrne I'm thinking of he was an ATCO and not a pilot.

View from the Tower Kevin Byrne? You might be right there. Must be confusing him with someone else...Don't know where I got the Silver swallows connection from...
Thats at least twice this year I have been wrong now...

            • The M346FA is a nice aircraft if you need a gap filler but as a nation's only combat aircraft it is just not on the same page as something like the FA-50 from KAI. The FA-50 not only has better performance figure but they are close to that of a F/A18E in terms of max speed and rate of climb, but it will be hard to beat on cost. The 12 aircraft purchased by the PAF cost €260m, not something that would break the bank, plus it has an internal cannon, always useful to have if you want a warning shot capability!!

If second hand is the preferred way the USAF has 112x F16C & 11x F16D in storage, there could be a good deal to be had even if they will not last in-service for more than a few years.

                    • Option 1 and 2 are the same in my eyes. Where is the lease supersonic fighter or buy secondhand fighter from France option?

how did we jump from 8 PC9s/M346/FA50 to 40 Gripens?

IMHO it was to shock people; 8 Gripens would be €32m per year, which does not seem too scary. But the number of aircraft for full capability would be between 32 & 40, that is to give 24/7 QRA + training + attrition over 30 years. But it still misses out the ground control part which would add a few million per year

Exactly, the point is to get people to see that a basic capability isn't beyond us. They're not suggesting we build a force to take on the Russians, but this point gets lost on people

All people are going to see is 40 Gripens at which point the article has achieved the goal of killing off the idea dead in the public and political sphere.

lol. If a singular data point on a graph in a random news article is what does it we never had a chance anyway. Open and honest debate is only a good thing for defence in Ireland. The previous approach is clearly not working.
