All things considered, sort of a bargain. Though, I do believe that an organic strategic airlift is required.
What are you cackling at, fatty? Too much pie, that's your problem.

It's a bargain, in the same way as owning a Car is far more costly than taking a taxi for your daily commute.

Unless you need to travel long distance, to somewhere the Taxi doesn't want to go because he'll have no return fare back, so you end up paying his return fare too.
Or its New Years eve, you just met the love of your life, and their friends have promised them a lift home, but they'll go home with you... if you could just get a taxi.. or had your own car....
Or you are out hillwalking, and your buddy, who drove you there just broke an ankle, .... so you have to call an ambulance......and the nearest ambulance is in the next county.... and then you have to get home after...
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Like I said, we need an organic strategic airlift. The Afghanistan evacuation is just the most recent example as to why.

          • Expect more urgent evacuations in coming weeks I'd say.

              • Why weren't UNNY flying scheduled?

                  • I hope the DFA has kept the phone numbers of the nations we went cap in hand to for the Kabul airlift, just in case, but the DOD still says no need for any airlift.

                      Security Update

Please note that there has been an increase in tensions near some of Ukraine’s borders since November 2021. Further developments may occur rapidly and at short notice. Therefore, the Department of Foreign Affairs advises against all non-essential travel to Ukraine at this time.

If you are in Ukraine at present, you should keep yourself fully informed of the security situation by monitoring the Embassy of Ireland social media pages (Twitter and Facebook) regularly for updates, checking local and international media for news on Ukraine, and maintaining contact with your hotel or tour organiser. Citizens are advised to exercise caution and remain vigilant, and are strongly advised to avoid all demonstrations and public gatherings, as even peaceful protests may turn violent.

It is strongly recommended that Irish citizens living in or travelling to Ukraine register their details and those of any dependants with the Embassy of Ireland in Kyiv. This will allow the Embassy to contact registered Irish citizens in the event of an emergency. You can register

                      • Enhancement of the Air Corps’ fleet with the addition of A fixed wing aircraft with strategic reach capability,
                        - CoDF 6.11, page xvi

Best choice would be another C-295?

Depends what they want it to do

Internationally, C295 is tactical but you can also use a C17 tactically

As I've said before, a lot in the report is quite vague and requires reading between the lines, 'strategic reach' being an example.
Being mentioned in the section regarding MATS then it's a fair assessment it is referring to a Gulfstream IV successor, an intercontinental business jet.
The C295 has nowhere near the range to be considered.

The phrase that pays, "reading between the lines". It was ever thus. I suspect that the eagerness with which the PC-12 was funded and approved was to fob off the purchase of an actual transport aircraft. So, instead of lifting 6 tons and 32 people in one aircraft, you can do it in four and employ 8 pilots and four loadies, instead of 2 and 1.

Maybe an intercontinental business jet, and a transport 295 could be an interim solution
