  • Decommissioned RAF Kit

    All,

Now that the RAF are getting rid of a number of fast jet squadrans, Would there be any point in the DOD puting in a feeler to see what the state of the equipment being decommisioined is like, Possibly be able to pick up a few rotor assets also.

They are getting rid of Tornado F3s (pure AD fighters) & Jaguars (ground attack& recce only), it won't be worth it, we were to buy anything it should be capable of doing all the jobs.

We would have to buy advanced trainers (eg Hawk) to cover jet training.

There's no mention of a reduction in rotor assets.

The only thing the Brits are getting rid of that I can see as being of use to us is the Rapier SAM.

        Rapier
        Max Range - 8km
        Ceiling - 3 km
        Guidance - Electro-Optical
In most basic configuration it has a towed laucher of 8 missiles & a laser pointer

        RBS 70
        Max Range - 7 km
        Ceiling - 3 km
        Guidance - Laser
        More mobile

We are proberly better off with RBS 70.

In the event that we did hypotetically purchase some jets off them, could we not just send the pilots over to England for the Hawk training ?

They are cutting far more than a few Jags by the way : -

          84 Challenger II MBT's chopped

65 of its 290 fast jets gone

12 naval vessels (including 6 destroyers/frigates) on the way out

3 of the 11 nuclear subs are going

          :(

But are these vehicles not just going into a storage yard or something similar to gather dust. I would think that they would simply store them away in the case of a war then destroy or sell them something like what the US did with all those tanks/planes in the desert.
To close with and kill the enemy in all weather conditions, night and day and over any terrain

The 1 squadron of Tornado's COULD be usefull if the Irish Gov't had the inclanation to do a deal with Tony B Liar and include Fast Jet Training.

No, the MOD pushes surplus gear out to their agent's pretty quick, you should see the stuff they sell, alot is almost brand new barely used :(

But are more than enough to met our air defence needs, we don`t really need typhoons or f22s.
