I know this is nothing to do with the Air Corps, but I understand that to become an officer in a foreign air force you must be a citizen of that country. Is this a rule for all western countries or what?I was trying to look up the Dutch air force but I cant seem to find the entry requirements anywhere.Does anyone know if you must be a citizen of the Netherlands to join their defence forces? Thanks

Up until very recently Irish citizens could apply to the RAF but since America decided that it would only share sensitive military secrets to British citizens you now have to have dual citizenship to be a pilot in the RAF.You also ,in theory, have to be an American citizen to be a pilot in the Army, AF etc although a guy from my school went over with a green card to join the marines and he`s now flying cobras for them. Mind you he had a 1st class honours science degree and scored so highly on the aptitude test that the Cia tried to coax him away from the marines. He told me that if you have a good quality degree that the US Coast Guard will allow you fly for them but the AF, Army etc will be less willing to bend the rules.
Basically most countries have serious reservations about allowing foreigners getting sensitive jobs like pilots of fast jets etc etc but if recruitment is slow and/or the person if highly qualified then some may be willing to allow that person to join.
In case you haven`t found it; http://www.luchtmacht.nl/
Its in Dutch so I haven`t a clue what any of its says but I`m sure you doEducation isn't everything, for a start it isn't an elephant

I looked into join the Marines as an officer a while back. I was told that only a citizen of the US could. With a green card I could enlist....but if you get a recomendation form the Irish government and joined up you could become an officerWhat are you cackling at, fatty? Too much pie, that's your problem.

Just for clarification, the US military just requires residency for enlisted, citizenship for officer. But I have read the USAF will let you in if you are currently in the process of getting citizenship...."Everyone's for a free Tibet, but no one's for freeing Tibet." -Mark Steyn. What an IMO-centric quote, eh?

The information was provided by a member of the government and also by a contact for Co. Tip who had flown F-111 in the first gulf war.

This is an excellent thread where Walters like Futurepilot and Odin can display their vast knowledge of international military affairs and recruiting !!!
Glad to see that a 'friend of a friend" is still regarded as a reliable source.
Later.No-one, I think, is in my tree...
