sorry goldie i didnt realise i upset you...of course iv never flown a helicopter lik that...im only a wannabe. i just visualised for myself, "im out a sea in gale force winds trying to perform a rescue or somthing of that nature" ....a nice snug cockpit might help keep you calm and in concentration, wheras a cockpit like an allouette looks like you would feel every vibration of wind gusts and such!!as for the mix of instruments....well i basically like both old skool and new age....hows that???....also i'm fully aware that no one in their right mind would attempt a sea rescue in an allouette with the one engine, lack of avionics and stuff!!

Try reading up on the Dauphin's history before deciding if you want to be inside one during a storm. The Dauphin was not suited to the role it was used for, it was too small & had a crap range.
And try coming us with a better reason for liking the avionics than aesthetics."The dolphins were monkeys that didn't like the land, walked back to the water, went back from the sand."

As far as I can make out the Dauphin could have been a sucessful VFR SAR chopper, but what is/was wanted is an all weather SAR heli, the Dauphin was never going to manage this, such role was better served by either the Puma or the Westland Seaking....
But the government wanted the cheap solution ... and so 4 good men died at Tramore...
Now long after the event, their memories, their famlies, and the people of the Irish Air Corps, remain insulted.
There is little wrong with the Dauphin as a helicopter, only with this version, they will no doubt have good bussness careers after sensible rebuilds.. IMHO"We will hold out until our last bullet is spent. Could do with some whiskey"

The Dauphins do seem to have made successful SAR birds in the US, dealing with a lot of the short-ranged stuff while the Jayhawks do the long distance runs.
I'm suprised by the 'Puma as successor' comment to the Alouette above. Other than the Bundesgrenschutz helo that the Gardai borrowed, am I missing something?

A Puma was hired for use by the IAC early in the 80's:
From everything I've heard, it was used extensively and also happened to be here during a winter of heavy slow and was tasked with alot of relief missions. Instead of renewing the lease, or purchasing the aircraft outright, Dauphins were ordered. I think the general concensus is this was a tragic mistake.

Here is how it works. You give your opinion. Others disagree with it. You then give reasons why your opinion is correct without resorting to personal attacks on others. Criticise the opinion, not the Individual, thats how it works here. Failure to do so will result in your current status as a moderated member. All your posts must now be pre approved by Moderating staff, some of whom you chose to launch a personal Attack on.
Have a Nice day.
Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

Hmmm I wonder if the The Gazelle goes for few a Hundred Grand and if the IAC a million or two for the Dauphins could help put an extra bit of Cash in the *Kitty so hopefully the IAC could hope to accept the two options on further AB139s (Though €2/3million or so is not the price of the AB139s it could go a long way to helping the cause for further procurments of the type) Hmmm just a proposal!British officer: You're seven minutes late, Mr. Collins.
Michael Collins: You've kept us waiting 700 years. You can have your seven minutes.
[As the British flag comes down]
Michael Collins: So that's what all the bother was about.

i can't believe the alouttes have outlasted the dauphins, the alouttes must be the ugliest heli in the air, in fact it's not 100 miles from the 'copter in Skippy the Bush Kangaroo - what's that old truism about functionality and beauty?? a perfect example anyway.
Other than the Bundesgrenschutz helo that the Gardai borrowed, am I missing something?Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.

Prior to the arrival of the Dauphins an Alouette III carried out a rescue mission approx 90 miles off the West Coast. Question to squigs (who hides behind anonmity) were that crew in their right minds? I think the words that I am looking for are couragous, selfless and appreciation the latter by the person rescued. Give me a break!

Read Lorna Siggins[SP] book about what the Alouttes did ...................."We will hold out until our last bullet is spent. Could do with some whiskey"
