the Italian military today is a long way from the WW2 steriotype
yeah right, how come no one would allow the italians to take control of the missions in the balkans then?

We may well get an extra 2 AB139 at some future date.

Stay on topic lads, no more talk of Italians, unless it's the helicopters.

According to AW, the AC are the third "security/military" force to select the type, the others are the USCG and the Oman Police.

Any word on the contract signing anywhere? Not much work will be done in the next week, and none the week after...has Sikorski thrown a spanner in the works?

Dosen't matter what colour you paint them ...they are still shite!

Even the yanks are buying EH101s....could we not for once buy something somebody else uses ..or even has heard of?

A discount aircorps.....****ing PC9s and Agusta 139 helos ...whats next?

who is getting the backhaders from this one?

In fairness murf,on what grounds to you bast the opinion that they are shite? Flight International test flew one in june and had nothing but complimentary comments. And their writer was a Pilot.
As for EH101s...while it is admitted that they are a great machine,we need to build up the intermediate level heli before we return/begin MLH operations.

Suggesting the EH101 is a better heli than the AB139(they are built by the same people) is like Mrs Murf sending you to the shops for a pound of sausages, and you coming back with a steak.

yeah but we've had sausages for far to long...the kids are becomming bored with the variety ...we've had steak on sundays.....Puma leased and S61 leased....but the kids are all growed up and need meat every day.....gone are the days of running around saying you pretend to be a tank...we need the real thing now...if we keep putting it off we will nwever have the real thing.

In terms of time versus ability we stared heli ops forty years ago ....but we still can't put more than half a dozen men in the air in one machine at any one time...

If similar progress was to be applied to the army ...we'ed still be operating beaverettes. There were plenty of second hand serious medium to heavy lift machines out there and yet again we had to buy the nice new shiny one of f the top shelf....and for what so they can spend two thirds of their life in a hanger....buy them cheap ....abuse the shit out of them and replace them......the Russians had it down to a fine art....High tech and shiny is great if your have loadsa money .....we don't .

Again Murf you are missing the point here. These craft are expected to replace the Dauphin and Allouette, the latter which has served us well for 40 years, the former..well the less said about that the better. We will for the first time have the ability to airlift 32 CEFO equipped troops at once (assuming 100% availability, which has become possible with the "loss" of SAR commitments.)

While medium lift would be lovely, and Heavy lift even better, our limited defence budget would mean that we could only hope to see no more than 2 or less of either, while the elderly allouettes and Dauphins became obsolete, and became unservicable, leaving the Air Corps with 3 or 4 fantastic massive aircraft, but nothing else, and nothing to train aircrew on.

Its the beginning of a new chapter. If we keep knocking it like so many have been doing, eager pen pushers in the DoD will decide "well they dont want them at all"...and cancel the order, like so many times before.

The S92s would have been entering service about now....and they are still crap.

                              Anyway,get back to the topic...

yep the dauphins and the allouettes......and don't forget the gazelles...all fine within their roles but we have moved on into to the 21st century.....well so the civil servants tell us. we are no closer to being a 21st century army than we were 40 years ago ...at least airmobile wise. The americans embraced the concept in 1964...and here we are still training people for it.

you want to put 32 guys over the horizon using the entire helifleet of the nation....**** I can do that using three mowags...and still have some left over for round two.

the purchase of such minor machinery is purile. 32 men movements is a platoon in attack ...without casualties.32 men is a tiny fraction of what should be airmobile in the 21st .century.

hang on lets ask local rowing club to undertake fishery protection...and the local legion of mary to substitute for the ARW.

the S92 was notthe machine either. If we had even the sense to stay 10 years behind the rest of the galaxy we could have bought Pumas or the licence built equivelant which even the brits are doing
