Well actually i have to disagree about most MPs being failed soldiers, traffic police etc.
I was in the US recently and got chatting to a few MPs and they were ALL ex infantry, couple of them had done 2 or 3 tours as infantry in Iraq and then tried the mp route for different scenery

The MPs in the US Military do a very different job to the MPs here. As I'm sure strummer will tell you in much more detail as soon as he sees this thread.

A lot of the RMP have served their time in other units as well. Apparently the RMP is hard to get into, some join other units and transfer across.

I know quiet a few aswell and none of them are failed soldiers..two were line Cpls before they did the probationers Course and have recce and sniper course's passed.
Mp's is a Career move, thats about it.

Nah I stand by my oiginal statement
99.99% f MP's are failed Soldiers
or those just clever enough to realise that they couldnt hack it in the real army
or those who realise that the PA cse is the route to an easy stripe( YUP)
and by doing it they will never have to carry a proper pack over a hill again
if you want to do Police work join our esteemed Gardai
if you want to do Soldiering Join the Army
