Not a hope is it going to happen.
Kilworth is too much of an asset to the Defence Forces.

Once the New Fermoy-Cahir motorway is complete, the DoD have big plans for Kilworth, particularly given the difficulties that the building "boom"(no pun intended) is causing in the Glen. The Dod, and the southern Brigade are still sore that Spike was taken from them in the 80s for use as a prison.
Somebody in justice seems intent on stripping the Southern Brigade of all its useful assets.

I suggest the old Mallow sugar factory instead...

Not a hope of the prison coming to Kilworth. The local would throw themselves in front of the builders of it went ahead just to stop the work, like what they are planning to do if the anaerobic digestor is Built outside the village. 3 Years more and the whole motor way project should be complete and then Kilworth is going in for a major overhaul.
The only thing really need for Spike would be a bridge to the Naval College, which think is already planned for. There was a prison on spike before, still but its moth balled, so what wrong with it now, let me guess the woppies in cross haven with their yaughts????

Its a "site of cultural importance and heritage".

Just like the derelict Fort Camden....

I think the idea the government have in building new facilities on green field sites rather than adapting existing buildings is a very positive move..more room to lock the bastards up!...Sure we could always tear down some of the embankments on the ranges...and use the occupiers of the facilities as realistic targets..any way its closer to Limerick..so would cut down on tarnsport costs for locking the warring factions up...

As for spike..make it a military detention centre agin..seeing as the facilities are already in place,,no bridge needed..and the army does need anew detention centre..amazing how a trip to the 'Digger' used to focus guys minds as regarding transgressions of the defece act of 1954. I'm sure there were a few tears shed in the PA ranks when the 'Digger 'was shut down
Covid 19 is not over ....it's still very real..Hand Hygiene, Social Distancing and Masks.. keep safe

When did the opinion of the DF ever count for anything

if it works out a cheaper option the governement will jump at it

do you think that anyone in Justice even considers that we should have any grounds for

              training

sure all we do is sit in nissans and follow cash vans all day- what training do we need

the ultimate nightmare scenario is that

a prison in built and all nigth shoot s and activities are cancelled for fear of keeping the

poor misunderstood likkle diddicum prisoners awake
              Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
              The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
              Are full of passionate intensity.

But what about the cost involved in having us all take a trek to the Glen, and the associated overnight expenses...diesel etc.
This is something those in the hallowed halls of power would take note of.

When people think of kilworth they think of the camp and the ranges etc, the DOD own over 200 acres of land in Kilworth, you would construct a prison to house on 4-5 acres tops that still leaves all the room in the world for its current use.

Would it really be the end of the world if it was constructed here, what impact really would there be on the local people, its not like it smells, gives of fumes, has 200 truck movements in and out per day etc,

The simple fact of the matter is we need a new prison to house all the new scumbags, the location is ideal , adjacent to a main artery of the country, no purchase cost involved for the land unlike thornton hall, and believe or not it would probably be cheaper to build new than to refurb Spike Island

Have they not more than 200 acres?

As the 'hog said, they'll probably ask for (and get) piece and quiet at night - ie no night exercises.

Also, it will only be the beginning of the encroachment.
"Chuck us another 10 acres for a housing scheme/halting site/methadone clinic there, Willy. What's the problem, didn't you give MickyMac 5 acres last year to build a prison, like?"

OK, got more details on this Plan today.

For those who know the Camp, the area earmarked for the prison is the Section of land between The Blue Dragon(Corbett Court) and the Camp Gates. While it is DF land it is not the most important section of the facility. It is usually used for formation training, basic offroad driving etc, but it is outside the Camp perimeter, and often proved a headache for administrative and security purposes. Also it holds the camps sewerage facility...
It is nowhere near the Ranges, or the areas used for the majority of Tactical exercises. However it is used for other occasional "extra cirricular activities", evidence of which is rarely disposed of correctly by those involved...
Once the road realignment is complete, the other side of the road will become more accessable to users of the camp(you will no longer need to take your life and that of others in attempts to cross the main Cork-Dublin road).
Another point to mention is that Collins Barracks has been next door to Cork prison for years and to my knowlege there has never been any security issues in the barracks as a result of this.
However it is still a slippery slope. The DF are a soft target for other Government departments. Social housing, prisons, asylum seeker accomodation, and of course Prisons, all examples of how DF buildings have been transferred to other departments, without proper replacement of those buildings value.
