The Irish Times said that the total DOD holding in Kilworth was 3000 acres. The prision site will be 300 acres. Will there be even a nominal exchange of funds between the DOD and DOJ one wonders? Perhaps enough for a small to medium sized capital investment to be fast-tracked?

Its not just Southern Brigade thats being cannibalised..
Same story up here in 4th Western, There's a hell of alot of talk about selling off Finner, making it into a massive shopping centre due to its excellant proximity between Buncrana and Ballyshannon. Especially since the air corps doesn't really use that small run way.
Only real issue i would have with those rumors overall is that the only 300 metre range in the whole of the north west is in Finner....
Then theres rumors that Rockhill barracks will be sold off, though i dont see much in that since theres still 30years left in the lease. Wouldn't make any sense.

Rockhill is leased, the Defence Forces dont actually own the surrounding lands.
Lifford is tiny, not near the amount of land that Finner has to offer to potential developers, and of course remember my last reason. The proximity to Buncrana and Ballyshannon. In between two growing towns.

The DOD holding in Kilworth is 1200 acres not 3000, plus the amount of land under question for the prison is less than 50 acres, thats according to one of the camp staff I was talking to over the weekend out there.Only the dead have seen the end of war - Plato

Hi all
Won't the families of the Cork inmates crib, like the Dubs, that it'll make getting to visit their scum offspring harder? After all, it wouldn't do to expose those city dwellers to all that countryside.Still, it'd make a night exercise a bit more interesting if was a hunt for an escapee instead of a pretend enemy. With live ones up the spout...

Most prisons in the U.K for convicted prisoners are in fairly remote areas, once a prisoner is convicted, then they are limited, at least in the U.K, to one two hour visits a months, so the location is not that important. In Britain its quite common to have military bases turned into prisons, Camp Hill on the isle of white was a former artillery barracks, and Lindholme and Highpoint were former RAF bases, and there are many others others.
The irish prison service operates differently however, I know for a fact that prison officers in ireland are looked upon with envy by their british colleagues regarding pay and staffing levels.

in light of all the other relevant details that have emerged
maybe this is not such a bad idea
bring the srotums way way out into the country side
give them plenty of fresh air- rain and sleet
let mamy and daddy have to drive to visit them and give them treatsThings fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

I thought it was quiet good,
its a place I had never seen
it looks quiet nice
the programme said the prison service wants to put up a bridgeThings fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

They want their cushy life on the island back. Too busy for them in cork prison, also there is a multitude of southerners stuck in Portlaoise and Mountjoy wanting to transfer to cork but can't due to lack of vacancies, and thats just the prison officers.
Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

The place would be far better off used as a brigade training centre with a military detention centre..provides the isolation that focusses the mind..it was ridiculous ever letting the prison service take it over.Covid 19 is not over ....it's still very real..Hand Hygiene, Social Distancing and Masks.. keep safe
