  • Pdf M.o.s ?

Is there an actual M.O.S system in the PDF upon recruitment?

As, right now to me its join the pdf and go right into infantry, or join the cadets and become a infantry platoon oc.

I know in the british army and the american army you can actually get a contract before you even join up from your army recruiter to guarantee you a certain military occupation speciality whether its mechanic, patriot missile battery specialist, medic, infantry, tank gunner, intelligence, heavy weapons, logistics, driver etc etc.

Theres just so damn little information out there when it comes to the PDF.

You dont hear many young lads and ladies out there saying they want to join the PDF to do a apprenticeship as a mechanic for instance, Or hear any wanting to join the cadets to be a signals intelligence officer or logistics officer.

No, you just assume its infantry on both sides, whether as an enlisted or commissioned officer.

So, can anyone shed some light on the actual criteria, requirements when it comes to different specialties in the defence forces? Do they ask you for a preference when you join or is it your own responsability to get a guarantee for a certain specialty before you enlist officially?

To have the right qualifications (DF courses, college degrees, etc), rank, recommendations etc for the role.

So your saying a specialty requires that you go through the actual recruitment and basic training first?

Basic Training and then you apply for a speciality?

As oppossed to getting a guarantee that you will become an army doctor/mechanic/logistics *before* you go through basic.

There are such things as direct-entry commissions.

The best way to have it. Rifleman, I mean rifleperson first, specialist second.

Infantry based army so logical that everything supposrts infantry so everyone should at least recieve the basic infantry training.

Infantry is like a common denominator. Everyone in the Army should be trained and prepared to be an infantryman if required.

Actually zulu you dont have to reverse yourself the correct term according to the dfrs is rifleman/men.This term is inclusive of both genders.
"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

                      Komsomol,
Everybody, with few exceptions, gets basic infantry training, not only to know how to fire a rifle but to learn the discipline necessary for military service. the Army might never need a specialist to fire a rifle ever agin but they have to know, at least once.

I think Kom is thinking , yes your infantry first, specialist second, but is their a gaurantee that I can become say an army engineer.

Guess it's up to your aptitude for ceratin specialist roles. No point army committing to you becoming an engineer when you'd be more capable in Logs

                        Yes, No ?

Thats exactly what im getting at.

I have no doubt that every Army Recruit/Cadet requires Basic Infantry training, im not questioning that.

What i am questioning though is a guarantee of an Army Career specialty upon entry.

For example, If i wanted to join the army to become a driver. Do i just join up, do my training and get posted to kilworth and hope for the best?, apply for drivers courses and hope for the best?

Or can you actually apply to become an Army Driver or whatever it may be when you are actually joining up for the defence forces.

And likewise for the Cadets, are we to assume that every cadet will be a normal platoon officer like its always advertised as?, as i see no emphasis what so ever for actual specialties or careers Army wise. I dont see any clear indication as to how you get that speciality.

In the American Military you select your preferred top three Military Occupation Specialty when you are in the Recruiting Office and given a massive list of the various different M.O.S's, theres literally hundreds of them, and its supply and demand depending if you have the stuff for the preffered M.O.S. For example again, you join the american army as an officer, select Logistics as your preferred M.O.S, assuming you get it, your commissioned and sent off for advanced training for your M.O.S as a logistics officer.

Overall, what im asking, Is there any such system in the PDF?
As i cant seem to find any explination online. And i'd rather not bug my rdf oc about my innocent curiosity just yet.

Not true. Anyone reading the papers last sunday should have seen the advertisments for HVM(Heavy Vehicle Mechanics) apprentices as well as other trades. The testing and interviewing procedures for these posts include apptitude tests for the different disiplines. As someone who went through this process 20 years ago I can tell you would not have joined without the gaurentee of working in my chosen trade, they may always tell us that "your a soldier first!" but I have yet to talk to a techie who believes this

In the US military its a known fact that the first thing your Drill Instructor says to you about your recruiter is:

                              "HE LIED"!
It is only by contemplation of the incompetent that we can appreciate the difficulties and accomplishments of the competent.
