I noticed from articles in the meeja that two of the top brass appointments (those being the ones I remember!) both had battalion commands along the border earlier in their careers, along with UNIFIL commands. Does a border or UN command signal to those officers that they are destined for the top?
Putting it another way...if a PDF officer gets a, say, RDF LSB command, is his career effectively over?
"Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here...this is the War Room!"

Nowadays yes
no matter what bull is put forth
CO of an RDF Unit is now the golden handshale for a lad who isnt going on
just have a look at your CO next time
saying that not every Comdt wants to go- some just want to put there feet up
and some are really great blokes

Adjudant inthe reserve cav is a Rf officr..Pf offiser is merely a liasion officer all the old days the Co was a PDf officer and the seniors FCa officer was change witha captian PDF being liasion officer, all though this has all changed,
Covid 19 is not over ....it's still very real..Hand Hygiene, Social Distancing and Masks.. keep safe
I do notice a change in the age profile lately(since reorg). There are less PDF C.Os in RDF units, none in the corps units etc, and the age profile seems higher too.
Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.
one bit of advice given to me that i'll always remember is that if i ever was to join the PDF, do so from Dublin as it apparantly guarantees a better chance of an eastern posting (?)
And lets face it, the farther you are from Dublin, the less oppertunities and equipment your subjected to.
Their used to be PDF captains with RDF units they served as either/or admin (not adjutant) or training (not ops) officers. Not sure if this is still the case.
In the re-org of the RDF, many PDF Comdt appts were lost (12 in the South), as the CSS, AD and some CS units are now commanded by the RDF Comdt, with a PDF Capt as SO.
Many PDF Comdts as RDF Unit Comdrs have certainly advanced through the organisation into the colonel rank, noticeably in the South that I can relate to. The RDF is not taken as an advancement as such or doesn't appear as a 'tick box' on the AF451, but if you keep your copybook clean, it certainly helps !
Interesting to see how armies are the same in many ways. In the USA in theory "all assignments are equal" as far as career management, however, in reality, some postings have more "informal clout" than others. In the Infantry, being a CO of a company in the Ranger Regiment or 82nd Airborne are certainly more desireable on the old CV as opposed to being detailed as an advisor to a reserve unit. Having said that, there are those who have done well despite the "equal" assignment, but if you read the CV of any of the general officers, the words "reserve component assignment" are strangely missing. Draw your own conclusions...............A
Lt General Jim Shreenan did a spell in the FCA according to his bio on www.military.ie. He still managed to become a General.
he was gick so he doesnt count
but the original point was
those lucky enough to be given the position as co of a NEW RDF Unit
in all reality wont be COS
