  • DF In Somalia

Just wondering, what was the Defence Forces role in the time they were in Somalia and when were they there?

I've seen mention of it around here but nothing really specific about it and the curiosity has got the better of Me so I had to ask

      UNOSOM II

Approx 100 members of the DF were sent to Somalia in late '93 in a new role ie They were sent as peace enforcers and could, for the first time, use force to impose the cease-fire.

With thanks to our esteemed colleagues on military.ie who would never admit to visiting here............

Good Old Jim Sreenan promised an update to military.ie in early 2007...... Told us there wouldn't be any need to put up anything on other websites as Military.ie could handle it......

Jim has never let us down so far.

somalia tours were transport units with ARW as protection elements.

they weren't there as "peace enforcers" strictly speaking, although the UNOSOM mission as a whole was a peace enforcement one.
An army is power. Its entire purpose is to coerce others. This power can not be used carelessly or recklessly. This power can do great harm. Peace enforcement refers to the type of mission and force, not the fact that members of the ARW were with 1 & 2 Tpt Coy.

I believe there are some pics knocking around of a hummer, with a tricolour on it, being operated by the Irish transport company during this period, was it on loan or what?

Property of UNISOM. Just like the SISUs that were used in UNIFIL, and the MAMBAs used in Bosnia.

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.
