There was a photo in the Limerick Independent yesterday of 36 Infantry Group showing Willie O'Dea, a commandant and a third person in dpm and with a black beret who was wearing a green and black version of what appeared to be a Leading Seaman's rank slider...any ideas?

Yes. The Air Corps and NS when wearing DPM uniform, have a subdued version of their rank markings for that uniform. So he is probably in the NS alright.

What roles would the NS serve with this particular mission...or was he just hanging around the barracks when the photographer turned up? : )

Apparantly it's the most widely circulated "drop it in the letterbox for free" newspaper in Limerick. I found it on the table when I was eating my breakfast.

Usually they serve as riflemen unless they have a specific skill, e.g; mech, sigs, etc

EDIT: Of course, it could be an officer, as an individual pointed out to me

I'll scan the photo if I get a chance, didn't see any star on the slider, just 2 v shaped chevrons.

2 chevrons will pass for a NCO, Army Cpl equivalent
