  • The Reserve is Dead!!!

I've been watching developments over the last year or 2 (since the Reorg) and have finally decided that the Reserve is dead.

Many of the changes implemented have been positive but little details have soured their implementation.

The new larger Battalions created a more rigid military establishment that was needed. Before their were good units, and bad units, not nearly all units are bad as very good individual companies have lost their initiative and are unable to get training done.

PT Tests have been introduced around the country but Reservists still cannot become PT qualified. Hence people being unable to get professional (free) advice on how to get fit.

The university training scheme died a death as now Reservist MUST only train with their own units. Hence people who are in different parts of the country (ie. for college) may not train with the local unit.

The Integrated Reserve has started but the volunteers for this organisation are under so many restrictions as to make it near impossible to get people to sign up. And the hostility towards them by many (Both PDF & RDF) makes it just not worth the effort.

RDFRA has been completely shut out of negotiations. They have access to senior officers but noone is listening.

The latest is that (seemingly) eye protection must be worn on the range. But Reservists will have no access to eye protection (Most can't even get their personal issue hearing protection), therefore another nail in the coffin.

This is only a small list of the HUGE restrictions being placed upon the Reserve. It is killing Recruitment and driving young and old out of the organisation. Personally, the RDF has become a chore, something that requires huge amounts of paperwork, grief, back stabbing etc. in order just to get the simplist things done. Even a standard ARP has become an exercise in futility. And there is no return. In the old days, I got enough enjoyment out of it to make the bad times seem bearable. Now all enjoyment is gone, there is no incentive to stay in the Reserve for anyone.

    The Reserve is dead.

There's a lot of sense in what you've said, and the huge numbers of good people who have left is a sign that all is not well. Personally, what I notice most is the loss of "good heads" - experienced, mature people who had served their time and brought a lot of common sense to the organisation. Their loss has led to an increased role for younger people and the unfortunate "army barmy" walts who pollute our great reserve. I remember reading a thread from the initation of the re-org where someone said we would be left with "clerks and jerks" and to an extent, he was right.(The exception being us students, who bring wisdom beyond their years....)

The university training scheme died a death as now Reservist MUST only train with their own units
Can you elaborate on that? We have an NCO who was refused an attachment with another unit, are you saying that it is policy to refuse such requests now?

I'm willing to yield my place to these best generals and I'll do my best for the cause by editing a newspaper"

Why do you think I'm going full time.

You Canot Teach An Opld Dog New Tricks

I just love all yor optimism.

The reserve is struggling just like all volentary organisations. You cannot blame re-org or the PDF. In fact the PDF attitude is better now then ever. It is now shite. It used to be really shite!! The RDF is better resourced than ever.( know that thats not saying much but....)
But one can only blame society for the problems of volentary organisations dieing. No one wants to volenteer.

Trying to attach has always been difficult.

Moving forward though. If you realy want to parade with another unit put in for a transfer. It goes on al the time. If you are an NCO make sure its a unit with a vacancy at your grade. As long as your own unit knows that you are doing it because of ed commitments they can be quite helpful.

What corps are you trying to attach to.

Bull. The only restrictions are trying to get dates of training out in time to allow people to get time off.

There is NO hostility between our training staff and the Pln. From Officers to NCO's they all had excellent critical feedback.

Between LFTT, Live grenades, New equipment and weapons etc the Reserve has never been so good

Its not me, its a guy in my Unit who is working Dublin and wants to attach up there. I don't know what unit. In the past they were very helpful but he submitted an application a fortnight ago and got slapped down by his parent unit here. He's not a mong either.

I got some information today that was signed by a certain PDF Lt Col that will definately mean the death of the reserve and the integrated unless its changed fast. Not going into any more detail because I'm sure its operational info. But if the decision isn't reversed you'll all find out in the next few weeks.

My opinion: The reserve is slowely being killed off

Lets not tell secrets but can you elaborate at all? Does it concern operations, training, promotions, pay....

I can only speak from what I've seen in my unit. The intagrated lads seem to have been well treated and have been trained on the equipment used by the PDF. They have since done the same work as the PDF and by all accounts there is no problem. They are now in a position to use these qualifications and the NCOs can instruct on the equipment in our Unit. The Unit I'm in will certainly benefit for the intagration.

I do accept the point about retaining members and I have always said that recruits are the life blood of the organisation. The whole issue of recruiting and recruit training needs to upgraded. The carry on at the E Bde RDF recruit training in Kilbride last must not be repeated. This should go some way towards retaining members.
