Is it the case that most of the ATCP missions date from the time of the 'Troubles' in the North? If so, they are probably overdue for review. Presumably this will form part of the preparation of the new White Paper?

The average duration of an Air Corps CASA fisheries protection patrol was roughly 6 hours. Given that most of the fishing activity under surveillance takes place off the south and west coasts, how much flying time and fuel costs could be saved by basing the aircraft at Shannon or Cork instead of Baldonnel?

Most likely no saving at all, to be honest, the need to have people in Shannon or Cork looking after the aircraft separate from those in Bal' would probably outweigh the fuel and time saved.

Given that the DF appears willing to provide these services, and the taxpayers continue to foot the bill - in most cases unknowingly - what incentive is there for the Gardai to cancel any of them? In other words, what is driving efficiency in this area? The British Army have formally ended their operations in Northern Ireland. Isn't it time we looked again at activities that date from the 1970s?
