  • RDF Mallow Accomodation [ Dail Question ]

    476. Deputy Seán Sherlock Information Zoom asked the Minister for Defence Information Zoom if the RDF headquarters in Mallow, County Cork which is reported to have been condemned is to receive an allocation of funding toward the cost of reconstruction; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29264/07]
Minister for Defence (Deputy Willie O’Dea): Information Zoom Facilities available to the Reserve Defence Forces (RDF) in Mallow comprise of two buildings, the Brigade Headquarters which is a two story building used as offices and a single story timber building used for storage and training.

The Military Authorities have confirmed that the timber building was demolished earlier this year. They have also confirmed that it is planned to replace this facility in 2008. The Reserve will continue to use the remaining facility until the new facility is completed.

Facilities available to the Reserve Defence Forces are continuously monitored to ensure that they are adequate to meet requirements.

    477. Deputy Seán Sherlock Information Zoom asked the Minister for Defence Information Zoom if he will grant permission to a club (details supplied) in County Cork for the use of the local army reserve hall in the town as a training facility; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29424/07]

Minister for Defence (Deputy Willie O’Dea): Information Zoom The premises in County Cork which is the subject of this question is under the administration of my Department. I have recently received a request for use of the premises from the organisation concerned and the matter is currently being considered in my Department

We can expect to see a lot of former FCA HQs around the country being "re allocated", as the RDF slowly dies, and the cost of Lighting and heat in these establishments does not equate to the return of services these units deliver.

The Local Council in Midleton, county Cork asked recently what the plans were for the Local RDF hall(A Coy 34 Res Inf Bn), seeing that it is "no longer in regular use".

The Government, in July, 1998, approved a programme
of evacuation and sale of six barracks considered
          surplus to military requirements, including
two barracks in County Cork. Murphy
Barracks, Ballincollig and Fitzgerald Camp, Fermoy.
Most of the property at Murphy Barracks,
Ballincollig has been sold and the disposal of the
remaining lands is being progressed at present.
Circa 19 acres at the former Fitzgerald Camp,
Fermoy were sold to Cork County Council in
2001. An area of the Campfield, Collins Barracks,
Cork is presently in progress of disposal to Cork
City Council, while an area at Kilworth is being
transferred to the Department of Justice,
Equality and Law Reform. My Department’s
property portfolio is kept under on-going review.
Properties deemed surplus to military requirements
are disposed of and the funds invested to
meet the equipment and infrastructure needs of
          the Defence Forces.
Inquiries are received in the Department from
time to time in relation to the availability of
properties for sale. During the past two years
such enquiries have been received concerning
lands on Bere Island; the plots adjacent to
          Military Barracks, Buttevant; Furious Pier,
          Castletownbere; Fermoy and the Reserve
Defence Forces premises at Mallow, Shanbally
and Youghal. The Department also receives
enquiries from time to time in relation to local
community access to and use of its properties.

Cork City — 7 Eldred Terrace
Buttevant — 2 plots adjacent to Military
            Barracks

Whitegate — Plot at Curtain’s Wells

Do any of you lads know what these plots are
            Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
            The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
            Are full of passionate intensity.

New Barracks in Fermoy is a Pitch and Putt course. Its buildings were demolished sometime in the 70s I think, but the Perimeter wall remains.
The Airstrip part of the aerodrome, former HQ of 1 Cav Sqn is also no more, having recently become part of a new commercial park. The Chapel and some of the Huts, used by the RDF remain, as the Chapel was left to the local community. The WW1 vintage Hangars are gone though.

The two remaining timber huts in what remains of Fitzgerald camp are to have met the wrecking claw today.

Do you mean land bank as in DF owned property cause of the 7 locations our unit used to operate out of: 2 are occupied posts, 1 has closed, 2 are leased (1 under potential threat from lose of lease) and 1 ??? Plus they may be trying to getting rid of a certain range.

That's the kind of thing I'm talking about... no names no pack drill but an interested reader of Dail debates would find all they need.
