  • Recall From First Line Reserve

    Has anyone ever been recalled into the DF from the First Line Reserve?

    The US equivalent is known as the IRR (Individual Ready Reserve) and depending on your enlistment contract and other choices you may or may not do 2 years in an IRR status. It is not unheard of to get recalled to Active Duty from the IRR...everybody knows that going in.

    Has it ever happened in Ireland?

    How about Officers? In the US, they may resign from Active/Reserve Duty but their commissions are transfered into IRR Commissions, and they are still liable to recall. It takes a specific act of resigning the IRR Commission (when eligible) to completely get off the recall list. IIRC they can still be recalled up to age 60 if they don't resign the IRR Commission.

    Are Irish DF Officers subject to recall at anytime?

    Christ no

    half the large security firms in Ireland would be without operations managers
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
    Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
    The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
    The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.

        I was reading the white paper on defence recently and the review of implementation. It has some info on the first line reserve and when they were, if ever used. Probably your best bet for info.

          I know of two reservists who rejoined from the reserve. I'm not sure whether they were recalled or if they rejoined voluntarily though.

              i was in the first line for 6 years n left it to join the rdf. Never thought it likely id be called up tbh.

              Mind you i served with a pte in the 3 bn who was called up from the first line in the early 1970's and was still serving when i was discharged in 99. Every 2 months or so he just got his call out notice renewed , in the end he was simply taken back onto the unit strength full time .
              Anyone need a spleen ?

                NS Officers (both Ops and Engineering) on the First Line Reserve come back on a regular basis, many do three to four weeks a year.

                    They were recalled and were never stood down. They were eventually taken back on the strength through their own choice.

                      or more depending on their qualification and situation required.

                        Hi there
                        They used to bring back ex-Air Corps pilots on a two-week summer camp.I met some of them who had come back from Aer Lingus and had a ball whizzing around in Fougas and Marchettis, instead of the usual straight-and-level stuff.They don't do it now, though.
                        regards

                            I went to sea on Orla a few years back on annual training and the XO and MEO were FLR, this was Celtic Tiger times and people were getting out.
