  • Assessments 2008

Got a quick look at the proposed form of this Octobers assessments .

First impression is that its a much tougher weekend than previous years and any units that are tasked with being involved will need to spend a lot of time on the ground preparing for it . IMHO its about time these assessments were stepped up a few levels in seriousness.

Apart from the usual problem of getting people to commit and then act turn up the fact that in the south theres a shortage of blank ammunition could be a big hinderence in any training.

Well given what I saw at last years it had actually climbed 100% on the previous year...but certain skills were serious lacking...signals.and comand and control being tow that immediately came to mind.

The whole assment wasn't monitored properely beyond section level and the command and control aspect. signals, coms weren't properely adressed within the participating units and merely handed over to to units who had no active part in the actual assesment.

Security brief was non existant from any level and we had a free hand to particpate at what ever level took our interest.

In the end we operated at Commnd Comms level between excerising units and HQ...Security element, Road traffic advisory and Ambulance service..and we only had 2 FFrs and 2 GS with local Coms on the ground

2 platoon in attacks on day one , base camp routine, night patrols and a platoon in attack the next morning should be enough to keep those involved busy so there ll be no nights in the canteen or baltinglass . bout time the df took this thing seriously
