does anyone know what is the likelyhood of you getting to choose the barracks you want to get stationed to after recruit training in the army? or is it out of your hands altogether.

    cheers.

You can state a preference but it's out of your hands and totally decided by the requirements of the Defence Forces

Further to that, you can be sent to any unit in ANY service corps where the Army requires numbers. This could range from an artillery unit to the Equitation School.

Although more often than not, the majority of recruits trained by a unit, will end up being posted to THAT unit, e.g; 2 Inf Bn runs a recruit course and 40 pass out, with 25 going to 2 Inf Bn - as an example only

The recruits being that were taken on in the west were given extra points in the interview if they were from the bks where they were to be posted when trained. The idea being that they would not being kicking up a fuss trying to get transferred before they even touch down in the unit.

In recent years this has been a major problem, with the army seeming to purposely post lads as far from home as possible without leaving the brigade

The Army's point of view, at least according to one officer, is that a disproportionate amount of W Bde recruits are from Donegal, where all the Barracks are over-strength (as is Longford). Therefore, realistically they are not going to be posted any closer to home than Galway or Athlone, which means that if you are from any area of the Bde other than Donegal you are likely to be sent to Athlone (the largest) or Mullingar (where Donegal lads aren’t sent). Hence no-one in the West is happy!

"Why, it appears that we appointed all of our worst generals to command the armies and we appointed all of our best generals to edit the newspapers. I mean, I found by reading a newspaper that these editor generals saw all of the defects plainly from the start but didn't tell me until it was too late. I'm willing to yield my place to these best generals and I'll do my best for the cause by editing a newspaper"

Ha! I'll let the lads know they were sent here by mistake!

Expressing a prefernece is usually the best way of being posted away from the unit you initially wanted!

                    Join the navy

If you join the navy then you will have a fair idea where they are going to station you.
Cuts out the guess work

                    Are they taking requests?

If the Reserve are "weekend soldiers" then Hairy Alaska is a "wet weekend soldier".

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

                              Ooooooooh good one man.

What age are you now? And you still try to trade insults with people behind a computer screen.... Unlucky.

And why oh why did ya decided to bring the RDF into it? Feeling a bit insecure about the organisation you're a part of?
