Army dodgy drivers like Cowan's driver?

With all this talk today about Cowans car speeding I spotted this on my way to work this morning. Approx 25 cav motorbikes in No. 1's driving in the bus lane

273.—Where a manoeuvres (authorisation) order is made, section 164 of the Road Traffic Act, 1933 (No. 11 of 1933), shall not, during the period specified in the order, apply in respect of a vehicle which is being driven by or in the charge of a member of the Defence Forces who is for the time being engaged in the military manoeuvres authorised by the order.

There has been acceptance within the by-laws in dublin, that motorcyclists will not get prosecuted for using bus lanes. Indeed there is an effort being made to add motorcyclists to the range of vehicles that can use the bus lane. Motorcycles don't impede the movement of traffic, you see.

However... Bus lanes are full of oul, diesel and road crud run off. I'd avoid it personally.

They were playing with a new one in the Brugha a few weeks ago.

Well the only difference between the old one and the new is a few extra ccs, a Baguette holder in the pannier(not a joke) a practical adjustable screen and a different clock layout. Surely this shouldnt change the operating procedure. Is Mary fond of fresh Baguettes?

Not just an acceptance that motorbikes can use the bus lanes, they have always been permitted to do so, just look at any of the signs on the older bus lanes and you will see a picture of a motorbike as well as a bus. It was only with the introduction of Quality Bus Corridors (QBC's) that there was a question of legality arising

It has long been the case that the rules of the road don't apply, on a practical level, to Ministers in a State car.No Garda in his right mind is going to pull over a State Merc, even if it only contains a Minister's wife out shopping or a Minister's son being transported home, unless he fancies a transfer to career death.Unless the Minister's car actually kills someone, that is.Wherein, the driver will take the fall...

Stopping a minister is not career suicide, I know of two former traffic corp members who've stopped ministers for speeding in their personal cars and neither have suffered for it - in fact one got promoted last year.

Theres more than just resistance to having motorcyclists use bus lanes - the RSA and the local authorities are completely set against it, and for good reason.
