  • they should be re housed in units which are under strength and damn the consequences. its the military, not a holiday camp.
"He is an enemy officer taken in battle and entitled to fair treatment."
"No, sir. He's a sergeant, and they don't deserve no respect at all, sir. I should know. They're cunning and artful, if they're any good. I wouldn't mind if he was an officer, sir. But sergeants are clever."

    • How would you get someone parading in DFTC to parade in Dundalk for example . I would advertise the vacancy and if no-one responds ...

"No, they're trying to fly the tank"

      • I understand the predicament, but do you think having them sitting there SWA is an answer?
if they dont want to be SWA
and there is no immediate vacancy
then they should be making an effort to parad elsewhere or transferring to a different corps
if they are not interested in moving and no vacancy will ever come up then they should be encouraged to leave.
im parading an hours drive from my home.
we've had good sargents leave because they were SWA and there was no near vacancy, they were good when serving and were superbly honorable even in the act of leaving because this is helping cull the herd.
Ive witnessed other units crustys sitting around sipping tea regaling all and sundry with tales of days of yore, telling them about sunny days of charging about the glen with muzzle loaders and guzzling hip flasks amid glorious platoon attacks on trenches....
and there are decent NCO's leaving because they are disheartened and have nothing to do.

Currently I am 250% of my Sgt strength and they are all mostly parading so for sure it won't be in my end of things . A sgts promotion competition should open some real interesting discussions, it'll be like the PDF in the '90s, I know of a couple of units who have very few < 50% of their Sgt strenght and the OC has a pain in his nuts over it.
I presume DFHQ looks at both the local and national figures when deciding to allow a promotion. I know on the form the establishment and strength of the unit need to be filled it. ?????

          • SWA - yes. Idle - not in the slightest. We're busy out the door with work for everyone and could do with a load more

            • There does not appear to be a process for either:
              a) Advertising vacant positions in units and allowing people to apply for them.
              b) or, examining the strength at each rank level and assigning people SWA in one location to positions in another location.

Option A being preferred because otherwise someone who active but SWA could find themselves in Tralee against their wishes

                • a) BRO/RO ? PDF gets by OK with that system
                  b) G1/S1/J1 function would seem to me

agree needs to be actually implemented tho

SWA will be a problem in the short term, at least
How many are completing and passing fitness tests and medicals annually, for instance?
This would certainly lead to a further cull in some cases
"Well, stone me! We've had cocaine, bribery and Arsenal scoring two goals at home. But just when you thought there were truly no surprises left in football, Vinnie Jones turns out to be an international player!" (Jimmy Greaves)!"

                      • I see someone put up a picture of some RDF pers wearing the black beret at the All Army on a certain FB page and people are losing their minds over it.

"Rdf getting back berets now ,wtf, how? No need to join PDF now"
"I just don't feel the RDF deserve the recognition that the PDF deserve when you did no where near the same training"
                        "I'm so glad I retired"
"Will be cool paddys day to see half of them falling all over town giving the army a great name"
"Giving the black beret to rdf is laughing in the faces of the full-time PDF service men& women who put so much hard work in to the military home and aboard, also laughing in the faces of those who have been killed. Sad bay for PDF personal now. Should never of happed."

WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW, PDF? WHERE IS HE?!
I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

                        • It has been a very long time since I have seen DF (either kind) personnel in uniform drinking in a pub on Paddy's day. What most posters don't realise is that the general public never could tell the difference between PDF and RDF and probably never even knew there were two organizations. And as it is a requirement for RDF personnel to parade to and from the barracks in uniform while the tendency is for PDF to change in barracks, the RDF have essentially become the public face of the DF, them and the cash escorts.

No more cash escorts either so that's out the window.

"who's a bagger" at the all army was hilarious apparently listening to the stories. Beerguts and standing in doorways is no longer a prime identification.

OTOH I just did a week fulltime with 143 PDF and 1 other RDF man in black berets, and we just did our jobs and got on with it, doing real, valuable work with a BG not doing enemy or other floorfillers, , but actual difficult, line, work we'd been trained to do in the Infantry ..... who knew ? Nobody freaked or pissed in their cornflakes

I'm sorry Trell, you must be sorely mistaken. RDF pers are only good for enemy parties or falling around the camp drunk. There's no way that someone who (used to) wear/s a green beret can be of any use to any "real" soldier.

On the berets thing. The RDF wearing a black beret is a disgrace to every army ever /sarcasm
