Correct. Garda clearance is the same for rdf and pdf applicants. However only rdf clearance can take up to a year. No reason for this other than the df not moving the process efficiently due to whatever logicistical obsticles. Operational requirements, lack of manpower etc... if the df were suddenly told it would take 15 months to enlist recruit platoons though, im sure someone would own it and sort it. The problem is that there is no one getting heat about it from above so no real incentive to sort it.

The commitee on defence had some nice supportive words to say on the subject last year, but no real follow through. Paul keogh just reads the same party line and does effectively nothing and everyone moves on.

    • Its the same in IRCG, garda vetting was introduced last year for existing and new applicants alike and twelve months later most of us are still waiting for the nod.

      • I was vetted for my sports club recently for child protection etc , < 7 days turnround from submission of eVetting.

        • Indeed. I was similarly vetted 3 times for GAA, rugby and sailing clubs and all came back within 2/3 weeks which would suggest AGS cant be to blame.

          • Also except action before the end of the year on the Specialist Reserve
Been said a few dates for true enlightenment on this already this year, not holding breath tbh ( and be prepared for this to be very unlike what people are thinking about , theres a very specific goal here )

To me the whole idea is the a bit wrong. If someone has a special skill they should (as far as possible) be in the appropriate unit (eg Tpt, Engr, CIS etc) or part of the DFHQ RDF Special Staff.

But what is being proposed is workable so long as they know to say or let's check if there are any RDF lads with ....

That's what I said in my quoted post above!

                • Having spoken to people who have been involved in both the PDF and RDF recruitment delays in medicals and security clearances are not limited to the RDF. However as you are applying for a full time job that you really want people are willing to wait a year or two to be selected (there is drop off but not as much as in the RDF). The security clearance process is not the same as the Garda vetting for clubs etc. so a comparison to timelines is not appropriate. That being said this used to be performed in about 16 weeks with a small number of exceptions so I do not understand why there are significant delays now.

Yep. I recall signing up the previous Sept/Oct. About Nov or so, got form in the post to bring to Garda station to get stamped as to my good character. The January following I was sworn in...

More PDF recruitment and less staff

Afaik it is the same there are just extra steps

                      Is it public domain?

Was even shorter in some parts. A matter of weeks, and hey presto! You're being handed wrong-size clothing issue

                        • So i keep hearing from the powers that be ( in the PDF of course) that the single force concept is working nicely in certain specialist corps units. Can anyone honestly tell me if this is true (some concrete examples would help shed some light) or if the Corps units are dying a painful death like the rest of the RDF?

Well I know of a number of people that have instructed on PDF courses, people who have instructed other militaries (and civilians) on courses, assessed PDF on PDF competitions, all aspects of introducing new software into the DF (for use in the EUBG) and replacing PDF on duties (including Bde stand to).

I also know of someone who was sent on a course overseas (not even within Europe).

The above isnt hearsay or 3rd hand by the way

In my experience, if your competent and available your accepted.

                            • CIS would probably be a stand out unit - at least in the technology theyve developed - a lot of it has been driven developed and deployed by reservists
"He is an enemy officer taken in battle and entitled to fair treatment."
"No, sir. He's a sergeant, and they don't deserve no respect at all, sir. I should know. They're cunning and artful, if they're any good. I wouldn't mind if he was an officer, sir. But sergeants are clever."

in fairness to that particular thing its very much a joint effort at the mo but its really exciting to see.

Moving onto other units 6 Bn just did a PDF and RdF mortar shoot ( I follow the OC's twitter and he called it out as an SFC ) so I seem to see a lot of people diving in and working.
