It’s a radical answer to lack of medical personal to check if a recruit is fit to serve, but in a country that sees itself as providing peacekeeping and uniformed social workers rather than defence capacity, a government that imagines its future naval flagship as possibly a mobile hospital, it seems like a missed trick.
Italy uses The Order Of Malta to supply it's military medics. Just saying...
'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
    Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

The idea of essentially volunteering to do my old job when I have moved to a new, better, better paying job just does not appeal to me or anyone else that I know.
And no one would blame you but even if 5% did it, it would be of major benefit to the DF

Do you think that if the DF was a better place to work that could change (considering all RDF activities are now paid)?

      • I love the volunteerism that the RDF now brings, I wish I had the same conditions when I pick rubbish with my local tidy towns or traing basketball with my local club. Need garda vetting and coaching courses for those, but don't get paid, Imagine what membership costs would be if if I was.!

Difference is they don’t demand professionalism

and most national equivalents pay for all attendance

          • The coaches are very good I will give you that and I suppose the little gestures of appreciation at the end of every season........

I meant international (typo) comparison of military reserves

The desire is for a professional interoperable reserve …. You can’t liken that to a voluntary community or amateur sports organisation

now that all training can be paid, I’d argue the RDF is only voluntary in that people aren’t forced to join

              • So, the cliff edge has been extended again for all to 60. I know some officers who will be very happy with this today given they're waiting for a Captain to Commandant competition and the clock was getting very close to midnight on age grounds.
What are you cackling at, fatty? Too much pie, that's your problem.

Will also mean less vacancies as :
Lt Col now gets extra 2 years (in rank)
                  Comdt gets extra 3 years
                  Capt gets extra 6 years
                  Lt gets extra 7 years

                  • This is not a problem in reality. Most Captains are O50 and there are a number of Comdt vacancies all across the force. By the time it might have become an issue the top end of the ranks will be emptied again. There is a gigantic lost generation in there, probably about a decade's worth. The Lt Col is the only one I see being an issue and there definitely needs to be some kind of movement there. This was planned for in the original 05 R5 but seems to have been lost.

That reminds me - what ever happened to that Acting Lt Col bit of R5 ? That was supposed to be for 5 years and then revert. That was under the old R5, yes, but it's still only Acting

"Are they trying to shoot down the other drone? "

"No, they're trying to fly the tank"

Don’t think any Lt Col reverted to Comdt (fact that it was acting seems to have been removed in new R5)

And if any of those were to be filled pending retirement on age grounds … they now can’t be

                      • But their rank was and is Acting unless made substantive somehow in the past. Any time I've made anyone acting it always had a return spring on it. In times gone past everyone who would have had to revert after 5 years retired on age grounds before reversion. So it was never an issue.

Anyway only up to 39 on enlistment age, why for fk sake, WHAT WAS THE FKING POINT, how am I supposed to attract qualified high skill people who have all the learning and experience ? What does it fking matter what age they are they aint going on the front line fk sake. And I bet they'll keep the ex-PDF max age at 45.

The new R5 doesn’t mention Lt Col being an acting rank (unlike the old one)

there is currently no point in increasing the RDF recruitment age as we are only going to increase the amount of disappointed people (bad advertising) who can’t get through the process efficiently

                          • Anyone promoted since 2022 yes, substantive, but anyone prior to that would still be on an acting. We dont sugarcoat it to recruits at all so anyone putting their name down knows what to expect. I repeat this was asinine, not raising it to higher numbers.
