  • Wouldn't that then force the FLR members to train as opposed to doing F£ck all.

    Who wants that
It is only by contemplation of the incompetent that we can appreciate the difficulties and accomplishments of the competent.

      • Not necessarily, merge the FLR into the SLR.

Give the option to those on the FLR to transfer into the SLR and then get rid of the FLR gratuity completely.

One people coming into the FLR and those who didn't transfer get no FLR gratuity but remain on a callup list. Or possibly get rid of the FLR completely and have the contract so they must do 3 years in the SLR.

It gives a return on the investment in training, improves standards in the SLR and gives a VFM FLR!

            68. Deputy Eamon Gilmore asked the Minister for Defence the 2010 programme for the Reserve Defence Force. [15613/10]

Minister for Defence (Deputy Tony Killeen): I have been informed by the military authorities that, within the current budget, the Reserve Defence Force (RDF) programme of training for 2010 will include Unit nightly parades, weekend training field days, annual summer camps and career courses for reservists.

The provision in the current year for Reserve Defence Force Pay etc. is €4.7 million. This amount includes €2.478 million for paid training for reservists. It is anticipated that this level of funding will provide for approximately 31,000 paid training man-days for reservists.

Training in the Reserve is comprised of both voluntary and paid training. In light of the reduced paid training day provision for 2010, it is anticipated that there will be an increased emphasis on voluntary unpaid training and the allocation of paid training to individual reservists will take account of voluntary unpaid training undertaken.

The aim is to ensure that reservists who complete specified voluntary unpaid training will be afforded the opportunity to avail of a minimum of 7 days paid training and that there be an allocation of training man-days to be used to deliver enhanced training to selected members of the Reserve, through full time courses of instruction in addition to their annual training.
            1. Deputy Pádraic McCormack asked the Minister for Defence the size of the Reserve Defence Force in 2007, 2008, 2009 and to date in 2010 inclusive; the percentage decline from its peak to its lowest point; if he is satisfied with the size of the Reserve Defence Force at present; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15693/10]

Minister for Defence (Deputy Tony Killeen): The size of the Reserve Defence Force in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 (as at 31 March 2010, the latest date for which figures are available), as advised by the Military Authorities, is set out in the tabular statement below.

The percentage decline during that period, a total of 2,014 personnel, equates to just under 24%.

            Year Total RDF Strength
            2007 8,408
            2008 7,671
            2009 6,644
            2010 (as at 31 March) 6,394
First off. Where does the other 2 million go towards?

And second. What is this figure of 6,394? Is it effective and non effective?

Is anyone doing a cse AND annual training and being paid for both?
"Fellow-soldiers of the Irish Republican Army, I have just received a communication from Commandant Pearse calling on us to surrender and you will agree with me that this is the hardest task we have been called upon to perform during this eventful week, but we came into this fight for Irish Independence in obedience to the commands of our higher officers and now in obedience to their wishes we must surrender. I know you would, like myself, prefer to be with our comrades who have already fallen in the fight - we, too, should rather die in this glorious struggle than submit to the enemy." • Two million could include:

Rent, light, heat, not sure about cadre (won't say the amount would be that small), grat, subsistance, hire of transport, Coy Commander's milage, unit funds, uniforms & kit etc etc

That's why I would see the RDF coming in line to become something more mainstream and cost effective. And that would see it being centtralised.

Albeit at the expense of rural units, which as they say in Russia is Tough S**t if it does happen. But, it would be for the benefit of the organisation especially as the axe is supposedly falling on the numbers.

It would be the most efficient way of doing that.

Is the axe really falling? There is supposidly approx 11,000 in the RDF but only approx 4000 are active.

I was talking to the Doc in Bricins the other night. According to him new regs will be in place by next year requiring us (RDF) to complete a medical and audiogram befor being permitted to do APWT.

If you don't do APWT then you go Non-eff and then out the gate.

According to him, this will reduce the imaginary numbers in the RDF.

It introduces a mechanism to remove anyone that just shows up for camp, is unfit or just not bothered.
