  • what do cadets do?

    what exactly is a cadets role? do they operate on the ground with the privates? in war what would their role be? i always thought they didnt need much tactical or fitness training because they dont be on the ground peacekeeping etc with troops. im wrong from what iv read recently, apparently they are even higher trained for combat than privates??

    A cadet is a trainee officer. He is essentially the same as a recruit but the training is longer as they are training to be a commander as well as a soldier. They have to be able to do everything or almost everything the men under their command can do.

      On the contrary, the amount of fitness they do is ridiculous and are you taking the term cadet as in, what the Brits do with kids in their army?
      Don't stand there GAWPING, like you've never seen the hand of God BEFORE!!

        Their Role, is to be trained as the Future leader's of the Army. They are trained to a very high standard in what they do, becuse who would want to be led by someone with less training than them?
        I probably am wrong, sorry about that!!!

        Please PM me to correct me.

        But, not if I state an opinion, only if I state something as truth!!!

        I have bad opinions but I stick by them!!!

          Conor46, I think your question relates to the British Army Cadet Force (ACF), however I will answer your question with regard to cadets in the Irish Defence Forces.

          They are enlisted as privates for 15 months in order to train to be officers

          do they operate on the ground with the privates?
          Yes (some of their tactical exercises involve leading fully trained privates. When they are commissioned (become officers) they will lead their troops on the ground.

          in war what would their role be?
          They would still be in the Cadet School learning to become officers, probably in a decreased period of time

          Your recent reading is correct as leaders must be fitter than those they lead for various reasons and they most be capable of all types of operations in peace and war.

            ... but even allowing for this, the new 2/Lt is nurtured along by the veteran that
            is his Pln Sgt. Doubtless Hedgehog and Groundhog have fulfilled this role in the
            past - any good stories lads ???

              I never had a problem on that front

              Most of the young Lt's coming up, know that they have to learn from the Pl Sgt- most

              Pl Sgts know that even though they are showing him the ropes - the Lt is still the boss.

              The young lads coming up are clever enough to know who the wasters and bluffers are,

              before they get to the Unit they have found out all about who they are going to be workig.

              I learned from wise blokes and you never steer the young Lt's wrong- I still have a very

              good relationship with all the lads who I served under and I would like to think they

              have with me.

              There was 1 lad whom God decided to look at specially- he was very balanced

              totally stupid- totally deviod of personality- totally an asshole

              but even his own lads shuddered at his antics-
              Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
              Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
              The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
              The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
              The best lack all conviction, while the worst
              Are full of passionate intensity.
