      • I finally caught up with Mrs Browns Boys New Year show. I see that the Defence Forces are recruiting?
'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
        Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

              • Govt want the exers to return. Would you?

If only there was some system where retired members of the DF could be kept available, like some sort of... what's the word... reserve?

That would be difficult to impliment.

Exers come back in an block up vacancies that hard working NCOs had hopped to be promoted into? If they are supernumerary, what do you do with a second Squadron Sgt? Do they come back in at the highest rank there is probably a vacancy for? Most likely a Pte in many instances?

Hard one for PDFORRA to row in behind. Get it wrong and alienate your members. Get it right and piss off your members.

Unless they take back technicians only but as discussed elsewhere, most of them are not taking the paycut and drop in Ts&Cs to take orders from clowns

Well that’s the way it is set up for PDF joining RDF (which is wrong imho), no vacancy - next lowest rank

                    • This really does sound like the good idea fairy had a go at it. Its a long held belief in places that there are hundreds waiting to come back whereas they could provide employment protection to the reserve , mobilize them and have a fairly wide base to add to manpower for the duration of the crisis. But as usual its no go.

                      • The bringing back of former members of the PDF was legislation that was planned before all this and was based on the concept out there that there may have been people who left the organisation and regretted it but there was no mechanism for them to return. They are just bringing it forward and hoping it will also act as a conduit to expand the organisation if they need to.

In relation to the JTF, it is no different than setting up a battle group or overseas unit. People will be drafted in to different units to make up the JTF. No major change to CS4 required and not a difficult task to change it if it is. AFAIK the Brig Gen appointment is an acting one, no different to UN appointments at this level. By all accounts he is the best man for the job but it does bring into question what the other generals are for.

                        • Honestly I think this is a very cynical move by the Government. The chickens have come home to roost and the penny has finally dropped that the DF doesn't have the manpower it should have just for exactly these kind of situations.

The good people who left because they had no choice because of the disgraceful and short sighted way the DF has been treated in recent times should see right through this and give the Government a big fat F**k You. We were good enough to be treated like the Bastard child of the Public sector when times were good. See how you get on now there is nobody left.

Oh and BTW.When this is all over there should be a public enquiry with a "Please explain how you left this happen on your watch?" followed by a P45 for anybody in the Department who had a hand in it.
"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

                            • Theres 1000 ish rdf who would gladly go to help if they were requested. Legislation could be changed re employment protection for duration. If we are not utilised in this crisis we may as well disband because the govt or df dont seem to have any faith in us.

                              • This is a marathon not a sprint. DF resources are slowly being ramped up, their use will depend on the need driven by the impact of the surge. At the moment we are at status yellow (there is orange and red to go yet), with the cancellation of all training activities it means that the DF can currently meed the demand from existing available resources. As a reservist the best thing you can do right now is let your unit know your availability, if you are out of work tell them you can do FTT (I know of some people who have done this and are up on FTT), if you are still employed let them know what you can do. Then just be ready for the call. If we go the way of Italy or Spain then everyone will be needed, if the containment measures work then we may not be needed. WHICH IS A GOOD THING
