        As a member of the B A but from home i have a fair idea of what the Corps of Engineers back home do. As with every other Corps, they are soldiers first and specialists second. Engineers are all qualified tradesmen aswell as combat engineers. By combat engineers i mean they are involved in: bridging, mine warfare, water supply, watermanship, field defences and construction.As i say, am not serving at home but no matter what country - a sapper is a sapper.
        Every man thinks meanly of himself for not having been a soldier - Samuel Johnson

          Is their a general syllabus after 3* training or does the private or corporal have to chose what they specialize in?

            The way the DF works is as follows:

            Recruit training
            2*-3* training
            Corps training (where you are posted depends on needs at the time and sometimes personal preference)

            After that you are with your unit doing whatever it is they do.

            Knocker is correct, plus the following:
            - demolitions
            - driving plant (construction machinery)
            - ESS (Engineer Specialist Search)

                I thnk you have the wrong end of the stick there

                Engineers or whingeneers are one of the mainsatys of the Defence Forces

                while in Ireland they have a bad press and are seen as prima donnas who dont polish there boots

                when you go overseas though you see how much they do (and drink and crib)

                apar from the combat engineer bit

                life without them would be hell- I for one appreciate them

                sorry I couldnt go into specifics but no one knows exactly what they do all day

                but I know the Gennies are running - the water is fresh and clean- the showers are flowing
                etc etc
                Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
                Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
                The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
                The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
                The best lack all conviction, while the worst
                Are full of passionate intensity.

                      Yes - BFW are civvy staff for doing the odd jobs around the Bks.

                        Fixed that for you.

                        Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.
