    Hikers rescued from Glen of Imaal Army Artillery Range

    Tuesday April 14 2009
    Mountain rescue personnel and members of the Defence Forces have guided three hikers to safety this afternoon after they strayed into the 'Impact Zone' in the Glen of Imaal Army Artillery Range.
    The man and two women, who are all in their thirties, became lost while attempting to scale Wicklow's highest mountain, Lugnaquilla.
    They were found cold, but uninjured and in good spirits.

    It seems that peoples behaviour has not changed over the years, I did my NCO’S course in 1976 and I have unhappy memories or been sent up the Lug as part of a search party for come lost hikers. It was a Sunday and we were only in bed about 2 hours after a pln in def dig in that had started on Fri. All civvies were found safely but we were still up for a normal day on the Mon ie. PT run at 0700. Anyone else had a similar expirence?

    I remember having to do the same on my pots and standard course

    it must be a right of passage for us all

    Its a lovely sring evening

    so how the feck can someone get lost on the lug on a clear spring evening
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
    Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
    The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
    The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.

      More importantly, what part of "do not enter" don't they understand? Its on the map in big thick red letters!

      Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

        That only works if you have a map!

            well people are free to use lug, but they are supposed to call the army information office first. Also almost every walking group that goes to the Glen meets up there, or down the road at Fentons. So it shouldn't be an easy oversight to make.

              the army information office is Seskin School house. Nice lads in there too.

              Iv been told a thousand times that the old 3rd FAR nealry killed Charlie Bird when he got lost!!! they stop the shoot and 'rescued' charlie.

              One of our Sgts (now deceased RIP) contacted him after the event and organised a visit to the camp the following year.

                one would have thought the options to be limited in the case of a mountain..either up or down!

                  IIRC the Lug is fairly steep on either side, which means you have to go down a specific way to stop inconviences such as Death.
                  I probably am wrong, sorry about that!!!

                  Please PM me to correct me.

                  But, not if I state an opinion, only if I state something as truth!!!

                  I have bad opinions but I stick by them!!!

                    there may be a specific route but the word down means direction opposed to going up .

                    They failed to factor the option of a specific routed and were faced with the basic of choices , neither of which they were able to take.

                    Shouldn't have been up there in the first place in this concept eluded them.
