  • Wireless Internet

    I have a rather simple request/query-

Why is it not possible in this day and age for the army to allow/provide for wireless internet access in a barracks?

    Surely a good idea?
Or is there anyone out there who would have an "issue" with this?

I can't see any problem with it whatsoever, and it is something that would be able to give benefits back too.

Over to everyone else for their two cents.

And I am talking about wirelss, so it wouldn't put an onus on the DF for people looking at "restricted" websites as they would require a laptop to gain access.

Finner has it installed as long time.

Apart from recreation what would you want it for?

Anyone that needs to be on the intranet is and many or those have internet access.

because 802.11g has many security issues.

see below for taking it to extremes

No it doesnt, WEP has many, many problems, WPA (TKIP) has some and WPA2 (AES) is secure (well secure to governement level anyway). 802.11g is just a radio standard for transmitting data over 2.4Ghz. In alot of ways I would argue that wireless tends to be more secure then wired in enterprise deployments. Many places leave open ethernet ports in public places that random punters could plug in to.

There are plenty of ways to deploy secure wireless but in this case why would the army be bothered to supply wireless access in barracks?

Well the army intranet is something that does require a greater deal of access by and large.

I wasn't aware that Finner had wi-fi, but you learn something new every day. Likewise, why is it not feasible for it to be installed in every barracks?

Its fairly cheap to do also.

And before people get on about TEMPEST and so on and say how military signals could be picked up and decoded, where would the risk be any different to an internet connection in a house/apartment beside a barracks?
                      If you think about that....

It is quite bizarre that something as beneficial as this is not fully operational in this day and age.

Because we have a lot of people living in

the Barracks is in effect their home.

and as for the security issue

a lot of inhabitans have the dongle ( i hope to jaysus thats the right word)

If you can access the intranet from your home computer then the danger of infecting it with viruses increases 1 million percent. Also Mr Continuity IRA WILL find a way to hack in.

If the DF provides free Wireless access to all and sundry then inevitably some sad fcuk WILL download some nasty S&M, Paedophile or Bestial porn and it will be the DF's fault. Or at least embarrassing to the DF.

You want internet access in barracks, buy your own laptop and dongle.

                            Yes Hedgie you were correct.

Thats always been used as an excuse

I for one wouldnt look at any of that stuff and I bet the majority of lads wouldnt either

therefore why punish before the event- if a deviant glances at shit like that and is caught

then slap him ( except if he is into the s and M stuff)

I can sense that fingers are about to hit key boards saying what rule are they breaking

well to use a computer in a DF location you should have signed up to an Accepted User Policy

which clearly states what you cant look at.
