  • Officer or reservist?

Hey, I was flicking through the R5 regulations and was a bit confused.

    Member.
    (e) “member”, where used in relation to the Reserve Defence Force, means an officer or
reservist – and the word “members” shall be construed accordingly:

    child.
    (c) (A) “child” in relation to an officer has the meaning it has in Defence Force
    Regulations S.3 in relation to an officer of the Permanent Defence Force;
    (B) “child” in relation to a reservist has the meaning it has in Defence Force
Regulations S.3 in relation to a non-commissioned or private or seaman of the
    Permanent Defence Force.

My question is why there is a constant separation between commissioned members and non-commissioned members? The above quotes from R5 confuse me as to what is the difference between a child of an officer and the child not of an officer? Is it a case of privilege of rank or something?

By pay would you say enlisted personnel would get move coverage financialyl than officers if something happened?

Only applies to those enlisted prior to a date (which I can't remember) in 1979....
"Well, stone me! We've had cocaine, bribery and Arsenal scoring two goals at home. But just when you thought there were truly no surprises left in football, Vinnie Jones turns out to be an international player!" (Jimmy Greaves)!"

Some regulations apply to officers, some to enlisted personnel, and some apply to all. Examples would be retirement age, which is lower for officers than for enlisted personnel, while the non-effective criteria applies to all. So you need to have legal definitions to distinguish when you are talking about one group or the other and when you are referring to both.

The distinction for the chilidrens allowance is needed because it refers to different pay regulations.

I know of the children allowance. Thanks for the info. Would the differences be minor or major?

As the thread seems to have latched on to the child part I will answer your question:

Officers are not members of the RDF in the same way other ranks are.
They are discharged from the RDF prior to being commissioned and become members of the Corps of Reserve Officers. That's why there is always a distinction made in the regs.

No worries there, I get my edge from red bull before exams.

In the PDF, is a cadet regarded as a private soldier then discharged and then commissioned in to a PDF corps of officers? Why the long winded way of things?

Yes. The commission carries a lot of rights and responsibilities with it - giving it out straight away would make it a lot harder to get rid of a cadet that wasn't pulling their weight, for example. Not to mention giving them something to work towards.

It also means that the cadets can't order their instructors around.
