Just watched The Last Castle and was wondering if the army here has a jail and what happens to soldiers who get into trouble? If there is one, is it tough?

and Yes
and its termed a Military Detention Facility/CentreThings fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Going along the same lines I'd imagine that your next thread will be asking if the Army locks its gates and sets the alarm when it goes out.It is only by contemplation of the incompetent that we can appreciate the difficulties and accomplishments of the competent.

They were all moved to the Midlands a couple of years ago, and the Glasshouse has been returned to the Defence Forces. I understand it is to reopen as a Military Detention Facility.

It was once routine for offenders to get two weeks in the Digger, which meant two weeks of "dawn patrols" to spend the days sweeping up leaves, whitewashing rocks, painting, derusting,etc, all under the beady eyes of the PAs...........there was also a time when military personnel went to Spike Island and found, to their dismay, that civilian prisoners enjoyed a much higher standard of accomodation and conditions.

I did an escort to Spike once and it put the willies up me.
a guy from my recruit platoon had gone absent for about 9 months
he got 10 days and he said it was the worst time of his life- he left the DF very soon after that.
I also was on an escort to the Curragh and the lad we were escorting tried to escape when the handcuffs came off at the hand over
the BSM of the PA's tried to charge us for negligence because we just stood there as the PA's chased him
I was a very young and good looking Pvt at the time and we had a good CO who threw the charges outThings fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

As GTTC pointed out about Spike island, before it was turned over to the prison service was used to house naval service recruits. The prison service insisted on improved living standards before it moved prisoners in.Last edited by paul g; 30 June 2009, 10:53.
