  • Army Jail?

Just watched The Last Castle and was wondering if the army here has a jail and what happens to soldiers who get into trouble? If there is one, is it tough?

In the good old days it was Spike Island in Cork,

and then they sent them to the Military Detention Center

    in the Curragh Camp, Kildare.

    Connaught Stranger.

They've recently returned The Vatican in the Curragh to military control.

Anyone I know who did time in the DF facilities did not express a desire to go back.

What arm of the military has charge of the prison facility ? Does it cater for members of the air corps and naval service ?

With your other thread being about the criminal convictions you have to your name and this thread about military detention facilities, I'm starting to worry.

Going along the same lines I'd imagine that your next thread will be asking if the Army locks its gates and sets the alarm when it goes out.
It is only by contemplation of the incompetent that we can appreciate the difficulties and accomplishments of the competent.

It's already back in business AFAIK.

I understand it became an unfortunate necessity, as the previous method of using the states prisons was no longer a runner, due to both overcrowding in the prisons, and far more soldiers getting custodial punishments in military courts..

It was once routine for offenders to get two weeks in the Digger, which meant two weeks of "dawn patrols" to spend the days sweeping up leaves, whitewashing rocks, painting, derusting, etc, all under the beady eyes of the PAs...........there was also a time when military personnel went to Spike Island and found, to their dismay, that civilian prisoners enjoyed a much higher standard of accomodation and conditions.

I did an escort to Spike once and it put the willies up me.

a guy from my recruit platoon had gone absent for about 9 months

he got 10 days and he said it was the worst time of his life- he left the DF very soon after that.

I also was on an escort to the Curragh and the lad we were escorting tried to escape when the handcuffs came off at the hand over

the BSM of the PA's tried to charge us for negligence because we just stood there as the PA's chased him

I was a very young and good looking Pvt at the time and we had a good CO who threw the charges out

Irish prisons are actually not that bad, apart from slop out, they're far better then the ones in the U.K.

As GTTC pointed out about Spike island, before it was turned over to the prison service was used to house naval service recruits. The prison service insisted on improved living standards before it moved prisoners in.

Is it run by the PA's or the Irish prison service?
Facts are meaningless - you could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true!
