  • VFM - New Reserve Force

I wish to setup a poll based on potentially a reduced RDF for the future.

Considering VFM and the skillsets of current reservists, how many would be willing to use their civvy skills in the appropriate Corps ?

    examples as follows;

    1. I already use my civvy skills/quals for the Armys benefit.
    2. I would consider it in a restructure given the chance.
    3. I would consider it if my current appt was not available in the new force.
    4. Its not what I joined the RDF for, so NO.
    80
Yes, I currently use my civvy quals for the Armys benefit
    13.75%
    11
Yes, I would consider given the opportunity
    32.50%
    26
Yes, I would consider if my current appt is not available
    5.00%

No, its not why I joined the RDF
    23.75%
    19
Yes, where ever the DF needs are
    25.00%

Good poll idea. Wait till you see the amount of people "I didn't join to do my day job!"
"Are they trying to shoot down the other drone? "

"No, they're trying to fly the tank"

valid point....alot would want something different from the RDF. not to spend all week driving a lorry then spend weekend driving army lorry.

Another option for wherever the work needs to be done,

          Thanks Zulu,

The slashed pilot Overseas program was sentiment to this, all Engr appts had candidates who were not in the Engr Corps.

          So, yes a valid option

i'm sure if they "just bog off" not only would the specialist civvy skills they have be lost but you would also lose plenty of good, switched and experienced infantry, arty, etc. types.

a bit of a limited view to say people should only go into corps where their day job skills can be put to use. cutting down on potential candidates straight away i would think.

maybe the problem is the specialist corps don't provide enough training or experience in their relavent areas to entice those with skills into them?

a VFM RDF should be able to train people to relavent PDF or civvy standards to encourage bods to stay in units rather than hoping to attract skills into a unit. thats what seems to happen now with all the gripes of people saying they cant use their skills to their full potential and stagnating or getting pissed off!

I think the problems seems to be with the army's willingness / inability to put a proper system to recognise civilian qualifications.

There is also the fear the of the unknown and in some case RDF personnel maybe more qualified then there PDF counterparts -e.g an Advanced Paramedic in a RDF Medical Unit , A RF Design Engineer with with PhD in an RDF CIS Unit

I think there needs to be a better process and this process should be controlled by the relevant schools based on a standardised format.
I went into an Italian restaurant and ordered dessert and they gave me tiramisu and a blindfolded horse and I said No, I said mask a pony (mascarpone)

I've talked about this in length in a different thread.

4,700 qualified for grat in 2007

2,371 qualified for grat in 2008

Thats a MINIMUM of a couple of weekday parades, field days and 7 days FTT!!!!

your plan is grand with very minor flaws

but the thing that really springs to mind is

where did you get the guichi diagram kit
                      Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
                      The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
                      Are full of passionate intensity.

                        Programme called smartdraw.

Used it for University Projects initially,

Bought it for work and private use now.

Great programme. Anything from floor plans to flow charts. Expensive but worth it.

Great stuff there Zulu. I've been looking at the ADF recently and their Reserve recruiting is on another level altogether. It's the same process they use for their permanant troops and is pretty rigorous.

First off is a meeting with recruitment personnel who take your details, reccommend jobs (you enlist into a job rather than a corps) and answer questions. They then set up an assesment day for you which involves an interview to ascertain whether you know about all your job, your conditions of service, pay, benefits, the army and its roles, lifestyle yadda yadda. Then there's a psych interview, medical and a written test. If you pass all those you are given a date for recruit training (done at the same location and by the same staff as the regulars) as well as a date for a fitness test which must be passed before enlistment.

Compare that to some fella turning up because he 'likes da army and playin' with guns' and who is taken in because there are only about three other potential recruits.

                            Basis for Poll

The main basis for my poll is to determine what would be the best model/structure for the 2656 left from Bord snip.

Examining the possibility of approx 850 per Bde (with whatever the NSR is), what would the Corps breakdown be to sufficiently make the Reserve a VFM asset to the PDF ?
e.g. in the Integration model, 399 would be allocated to Infantry per Bde, (1 Coy per BN).
This would leave another 400 for the remainder of the Corps units.

Considering the current trg process with Infantry (mostly rural based in the W & S.Bde's), what is the effectiveness of their current training, with lack of terrain, basic tools of the trade in an occupied post miles away),etc, etc.
Contrast that with the majority of Corps units which can attract civvy skills in a more progressive training facility (occupied posts).

Furthermore, what can the Reserve Infantry Corps offer the PDF that practically the PDF will allow them perform/execute ? How much training is required to bring an Infantry reservist up to scratch for augmentation, and could one see a reservist being deployed in a role appropriate to his rank , and accepted by the PDF ?
Maybe Zulu, Docman could answer this, based on yere Integration experience ?

At present, Bk duties,ATCP are classed as work, which attract allowances, therefore Galway don't see that as a requirement for / benefit of the RDF.
Remember, Bord Snip also recommended the 425 from Chad returning into the DF home structure, so there should be more PDF for duties ?

From a skills perspective, yes, plenty of reservists contain quals that are more advanced than certain Corps doctrine, and yes, a realistic procedure has to be put in place to recognise all those that wish to utilise them for the benefit of the DF. (starting with DFR5)

But, where money constraints exist, is the Integration model suitable for offering the best VFM for the PDF given the non-Infantry Corps number allotments in the total number ?, or should more positions being allocated to those Corps units where lesser training is required (due to the civvy skills) for augmentation ?
