    I'm not a number, I'm a free man.

How is it bizarre? Any EU company can bid for the contract. The Northern one came in cheaper and suited the DF better. Deal done.

No such thing as "buy Irish" any more. Remember when the then tainiste said we should "shop around"? This is no different to the irish shopper heading to newry every christmas.
If anything, the irish tradesmen should bring their prices down to compete. It would solve lots of problems.

true enough! I wonder what it is though? more accom?
I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

Sounds to me like the local company 'expected to get it' on the basis that they got a lot of this work before, and then were mightly peeved that they lost out. Tough. The taxpayer just got saved €40k, and the next time out, the bids will be starting lower.

fair play to our northern brothers....better than our southern brothers ripping us off by min 40,000e if they got the contract!

alot of service providers and business people still not getting the "lower your prices" idea yet.

with money so tight now....people aren't concerned about buying irish, they'll buy from whoever is the most value. the tanaiste et all could start giving out that message instead

It would depend on the view of the individual tradesmen, I know quite a few NI guys who do not see themselves as Irish in anyway

the disparity in the minimun hourly wage

                      between both sides is alarming
                      Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***

Defence Forces sources said the contract would have been awarded by senior Army personnel because the armoury would have had to be designed “in house”. The sources said that once a contract is above €150,000, anybody in the EU can tender for it.

If they gave the job to an Irish builder charging twice the price they would be giving out that money was being wasted.

I would have done it for 20 grand more than the northen builder

I would then pay the northy to do it

                              pocket 10 grand and

bribe the council to the tune of 10 grand

the place would be built- the council get 10 K and so do I

be honest there is no losers in my scenario
