I'd love a 6 litre jeep. feck how many miles they get to the gallon. They look cool and with armoured plating and a .5 mounted on the back they'd be magic!!

Gardai have been using the 6 litre Jeep(tm) for some time now and are getting about 8mpg out of them, but prefer the Izusu Trooper

THere used to be a GS grand Cherokee at Pearse st. seeing as the drum brakes fitted to commercial models was critiscised as wholly inadequate any idea if the GS had modified versions?
Any idea on the where and what the armour is on the SRV?

I've made a mistake. In the process of reading up on this yoke & another truck I got my lines crossed. This thing is just a BFO pick-up. Apologies.

No provision for a GPMG mount either?
Every vehicle I've seen in use by european armies for these tasks has at least a mag, they're usually open tops ala the old Recce landrovers which I presume this is supposed to replace.

We never used open topped landrovers...

If you look at the photos in Karl Martin's book you will see many open top Landrovers, it was only in the late 70s (I think) that the DF started with the hard top.

On these new vehicles, they are a double cab full-size pick-up, with a roll over frame in the back, therefore they can be set up with an MG (7.62mm/.50) in the back (similar to the ACMATs in Somalia.

There are still couple of open topped Landrovers in service, they tow the gun-carriage at funerals.

per gallon, just waste of money. recon my arse, get out of the nissan and walk over the hill to have a look. would you not think it would better spend on trucks/apc etc

ooh, I smells an ass kicking coming on ....

More to the point though, its not like we know how many have been purchased. Looks like its a fairly small order, probably for future deployments with the ARW or in other specialist roles.

Its not likely it'll be on general issue for the PDF anyways; but on the issue of fuel consumption, what does our parsimonious and hygienically obsessed friend think the fuel consumption of a proper recce vehicle woul be?

And more to the point, is he really volunteering to perform recce on deployment in a soft skinned vehicle?
