14,000 euro is the sales cost. Any fitter/fabricator worth their title would be able to make one of these machines for far less than that. Army engineers anyone?

    3mm Thick hot rolled Mild Steel Sheet 2000mm x 1000mm = 80.00euro ex vat

    80mm x 80mm x 3mm Mild Steel Box 6 Metres = 90.00 euro ex vat

The portable generator and air compressor can be unhooked and used for other things when the sandhopper is not being used.

We're talking about effective professional flood defence operations here. Not some backyard smale scale accident.

Whereas a simple, non mechanical option can be belted about the place, stored in crap conditions, and if it breaks, sure it can be rebuilt from plywood, or cheap durable plastic.
Sure why buy assault rifles so when a bow and arrow is just as effective?

Hmmmm, now that you put it that way, it seems like something very viable indeed. A fun Saturday project I'm not a technology-phobe, far from it, it's just that when you mentioned the expensive machine thingy, I had horrible images of it being left to rot for the year in a leaky shed somewhere, and when it's dug out, it doesn't work. Which is why I suggested the cheap agus easy option that could be easily distributed to where it'd be needed. But that suggestion you had there is a pretty tempting one. Think it could be done?

          Diesel Gen €1,577.00

          Air compressor €700

I'd say you could make the thing for about 6,000

            Clareprepares for further flooding

            | 26/11/2009
            GORDON DEEGAN

More than 60,000 sand bags have been deployed across flood risk areas in south-east Clare and Ennis as the county braces itself for further flooding.

This evening, Clare’s Inter-Agency Response Team confirmed that rising flood levels in the Burren in north Clare earlier today resulted in the evacuation of a further three homes from the villages of Carron and Tubber.

A spokesman for the response team stated that 30,000 sand bags have been deployed in south-east Clare along the River Shannon and an additional 30,000 sand bags and 1,000 one-ton sand-bags have been placed in Ennis in a bid to halt the floods.
Tonight, 108 individuals – many of them children - were spending their sixth night in emergency accommodation at a local hotel after being rescued by boat last Friday by army personnel from their flooded Ennis homes.

This evening, the Response Team spokesman stated that it is progressing the rehousing of families who were evacuated in the Ennis area as a result of flooding.

The spokesman said: “One family has returned to their home and alternative accommodation has been identified for a further two families."

“Detailed inspections of six homes have been carried out, while inspections of a further 20 houses will take place in the coming days."

A number of the families have already expressed fears that they will not be able to return to their homes before Christmas. The spokesman said: “Ennis Town Council and the Health Service Executive (HSE) have also identified a number of private rented properties which may be suitable for the rehousing of the evacuated families."

The Society of St Vincent de Paul said it had received a large number of calls from people all over Ireland offering help for those affected by the floods.

“We have been inundated with offers of cloths, bedding and household items. This generous response to those in need has been very welcome and demonstrates the positive depth of community spirit in the country,” said SVP national president Mairead Bushnell.

The organisation said it was asking people who wanted to help to make financial donations to its general funds, and donate bedding and household items at its depots in Athlone, Cork, Ballinasloe and other SVP shops.

“As the situation is constantly changing we will respond to the needs of the people effected through our local volunteers,” said Ms Bushnell.
How long did it take? How many people were involved?

The one machine posted earlier could have done 48,000 bags in 24 hours.

My Prisoners would have had them ready since last april

and they would have given something back to the community

but I see merits in your suggestions

For a very small felony in teh Lebanon I had to make a new .5 Position with about 1,000 sandbags- just 2 of us

I never ever committed that felony again.

and I also received 3 weeks Ramadan

The answer is to try and prevent the floods but they will always happen. The other key is early warning!

There is absolutely no reason why sandbags couldn't be kept filled at any vunerable location having them ready to deploy would buy you time to fill & deploy more, there are loads of places they could be stored in vunerable areas. Most urban areas would have a council depot of some shape/size. Every household and business could have some to see them through the first 3 hours of a flood.

Arklow, Co.Wicklow is fairly prone to flooding, there has been a pallet of sandbags ready at the enterance of one estate for over a year and no one has touched them.

That floodstop system looks good and has more than 1 use and can be deployed extremely rapidly.

Another point, the cost of using sand bags is dead money as the sand has to be landfiled after use as it can't be used for building because of contamination. The bags have to be recycled and the labour of taking them away.
Not if they prevent millions possibly billions of euros would of damage!

One good story that was in the papers is that the Irish company sandbags.ie normally sells 100,000 sandbags a year, in the last nine days they have sold 200,000.

                      There are also other options:
                      - insurance companies (or even better planning regulation) could make it a condition (or complusory) in flood prone areas to fit floodgates or barriers (eg http://www.floodgateireland.com/ProtectiveBarriers.htm). They even be able to use them on some roads.

                      - possible alternative to sandbags - flood bags - 20 "drybags" weigh around 13 kgs and after 10 mins in water each weighs 20 kgs. They have a 10 year shelf life and are bio-degradeable

                      - there are also inflatible barriers such as NOAQ
