Defence Forces Stand Ready, Willing and Able to Assist.
    Thursday, 7 January 2009

Following Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea's direction The Defence Forces (Army, Air Corps and Naval Service) are on stand by in 17 barracks around the country to provide emergency assistance to local authorities and the HSE with our manpower and mobility during the current severe weather conditions. Primarily we can provide 4 x4 trucks, jeeps and personnel to move people and equipment as requested.

The daily co-ordination will be at local level from County Council’s or regional HSE office’s to local barracks, but this is controlled centrally through the chain of command from Defence Forces HQ.

Currently we are providing an increased number of Air Ambulance tasks to the HSE and have crews and vehicles on standby in 17 Barracks around the country. We do not have specialist snow clearing equipment but a lot of our personnel have experience operating in more severe weather conditions from previous overseas service in Kosovo, Bosnia and with Nordic Battle Group training in the Arctic Circle.

Our equipment (4x4 ‘jeeps’, trucks and personnel) are spread across 17 barracks around the country and we will fulfil all requests, within out capability. Similar to the Flood Relief Operations in November last year the Defence Forces stand ready to assist at all times.

    Today’s Operations:

•Liaison Officers have been appointed to all local emergency relief centres to co-ordinate Defence Forces assistance.
•Troops and 4x4 vehicles are on Stand-by in 17 Barracks around the country to respond to all requests from local authorities.
•2 x Air Ambulance missions completed transporting Neo-Natal patients to Crumlin Hospital by Air Corps today.
•1 x Naval dive operation recovered and raised a missing vehicle off Cross River Ferry Port, Cork.
•Army providing transport to and from Palliative Care Centres in Kildare and Galway.
•6 Air Corps helicopters on Stand-by for any support requests from local authorities.
Looks like we are going to be very busy over the next few days.

      None that I know off.

So far only Kildare CC is the only one to ask for DF help.

Also Dublin City Council said that as yet, they do not need DF help, but may
in the future (RTE 9 o'clock news last night)

I find it laughable that after 3 weeks of a cold snap (severe in places throughout),
that only now, a "Emergency Committee" is being set up, with salt supplies
set to run out "within days"

Can anyone tell me what the DF could do with regards to road clearing, that
the local authorities can' t already do (bearing in mind the local authorities
would have gritting machines, etc. in place already) ?

Apart from increased accessibility with 4x4 vehicles, for instance ?

Gromless was on the box in december telling us all about climate change and its potential effects, last night he was on the box saying this type of weather is unexpected. What do you expect with this clown in charge of the county councils.

Of course some other FG clown was outside the dail saying why isnt the army out "we have 10,000 men trained to deal with this"... I must have missed the snow clearing parade night..

Rte radio one was speaking to the head engineer with the roads authority in Northern Ireland.

He was saying that coarse grit is better at breaking up and adding traction to compacted snow and ice at lower temps than salt.

This is a direct opposite to what the Irish government depts responsible are saying.

Anyone see the Prime time programme last night on the floods?

The piece about Sallins was a joke to listen too, and Gormley's response on the show too.

Madness! And they argue about pay cuts, these guys should have been fired, it might help their case!
"The Question is not: how far you will take this? The Question is do you possess the constitution to go as far as is needed?"

I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

In fairness, removing snow / ice in pedestrian areas / footpaths is easier done by hand than machine. On O'Connell Bridge at lunchtime yesterday, the council had two guys clearing packed snow, one with a flat shovel the other with a brush. That is something that could be done, although it may not be the most popular thing with the guys with the shovels, I think it might help overall morale.

Defence Forces Stand Ready, Willing and Able to Assist.
There is nothing new about that- The DF are always willing able and ready.
                      Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
                      The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
                      Are full of passionate intensity.

                          Latest Upadate

The Defence Forces have the following Army assets deployed to assist the Civil Authorities during the severe weather conditions:

                          •Newbridge: 10 x Personnel, 1 6x6 Truck
                          •Maynooth: 10 x Personnel, 1 6x6 Truck
                          •Clane: 10 x Personnel, 1 6x6 Truck
•Enniscorthy: Assisting District Nurse reaching isolated patients.
•Galway: Assisting Palliative Care Nurse reaching isolated patients.

In the case of assistance in Co. Kildare we are working in co-operation with the county council providing manpower and mobility. Our equipment (4x4 ‘jeeps’, trucks and personnel) are on stand-by across 17 barracks around the country and we will fulfil all requests, within out capability. Similar to the Flood Relief Operations in November last year the Defence Forces stand ready to assist.
I got my brief today and over the weeked Im on standby for the ''Snow Patrol Platoon''.
