Defence Forces Stand Ready, Willing and Able to Assist.
Thursday, 7 January 2009
Following Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea's direction The Defence Forces (Army, Air Corps and Naval Service) are on stand by in 17 barracks around the country to provide emergency assistance to local authorities and the HSE with our manpower and mobility during the current severe weather conditions. Primarily we can provide 4 x4 trucks, jeeps and personnel to move people and equipment as requested.
The daily co-ordination will be at local level from County Council’s or regional HSE office’s to local barracks, but this is controlled centrally through the chain of command from Defence Forces HQ.
Currently we are providing an increased number of Air Ambulance tasks to the HSE and have crews and vehicles on standby in 17 Barracks around the country. We do not have specialist snow clearing equipment but a lot of our personnel have experience operating in more severe weather conditions from previous overseas service in Kosovo, Bosnia and with Nordic Battle Group training in the Arctic Circle.
Our equipment (4x4 ‘jeeps’, trucks and personnel) are spread across 17 barracks around the country and we will fulfil all requests, within out capability. Similar to the Flood Relief Operations in November last year the Defence Forces stand ready to assist at all times.
Today’s Operations:
•Liaison Officers have been appointed to all local emergency relief centres to co-ordinate Defence Forces assistance.
•Troops and 4x4 vehicles are on Stand-by in 17 Barracks around the country to respond to all requests from local authorities.
•2 x Air Ambulance missions completed transporting Neo-Natal patients to Crumlin Hospital by Air Corps today.
•1 x Naval dive operation recovered and raised a missing vehicle off Cross River Ferry Port, Cork.
•Army providing transport to and from Palliative Care Centres in Kildare and Galway.
•6 Air Corps helicopters on Stand-by for any support requests from local authorities.
