German minister calls for Lisbon treaty EU army

    DEREK SCALLY in Berlin

GERMAN FOREIGN minister Guido Westerwelle has called for the EU to proceed with plans for a European army under the Lisbon Treaty, which he dubbed “the beginning and not the end” of a common security and defence policy.

His remarks at the annual Munich Security Conference followed a call by Berlin’s defence minister Karl Theodor zu Guttenberg to end what he called Nato’s “absurd” practice of unanimous decision-making.

“The (Lisbon) treaty lays out a common security and defence policy. The federal government wants to make progress on this front,” said Mr Westerwelle. “The long-term goal is to build up a European army under parliamentary control. The EU has to live up to political expectations of its role as a global player.” The foreign minister sketched out a role for such an army as crisis management in a time of resource scarcity, to be developed by willing member states over time as a “motor for closer co-operation” in the EU. In a nod to Nato, Mr Westerwelle said such EU structures would not replace other military structures.

might give us some more funds for the DF..christ, think what the crusties will say
I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

being part of a giant EU rapid reaction course would have some cool upsides, mainly the amount of distress it would cause crusties

It would never work, just think of the chaos choosing the uniform when the French insist on hot pants for all.
You will never have a quiet world until you knock the patriotism out of the human race

The French would very quickly change their tune when they see paddy batt coming out on parade in scandalous hot pants and white freckley legs

One of the "assurances" that the government got between the two Lisbon Treaty referenda was that we wouldn't be forced into an EU army. There's nothing to stop us from participating in one, and neither did the Irish public vote no on the single issue of "should Ireland join an EU army?"

Technically if it operated like the allies in WW2, separate armies with very close co op a la the NBG it could work pretty well, standardization being limited to ammo and maybe individual weapons, an EU army could work to serve as a protection for all member states without the need for knickers becoming irreversibly twisted

Might be easier to start with the Air Force/Corps? An EU air transport fleet?

Think the best way to start would be to have a multinational brigade on a tour of 6 months at a training area somewhere in Europe, Preferably in ibiza. This brigade is on standby to deploy to anywhere required by the eu
To close with and kill the enemy in all weather conditions, night and day and over any terrain
