Luchi is right, I emigrated from CBB to the west 9 years ago.
The topping up of fluids in the engine bay and the replacement of bulbs, fuses etc is still basic driver maintainence. I understand from Luchi's comments in other threads that this may no longer be taught, but most workshops will help you out for basics like this because the last thing they want is a vehicle clogging up their yard waiting for a bulb.
On the other hand the vehicles Luchi describes as needing bulbs fitted in the dash, well any damage done by someone attempting DIY on the dash would lead to charges, as you have overstepped the drivers maint. boundary, and their are lots of opportunities to cause damage while removing the dash.

I am not suggesting an un-qualified person should wrench out the dash, I am saying a vehicle shouldn't be off the road for a week because of it.

I agree no one wants a vehicle clogging up their yard waiting for bulbs but this is what people, myself included have been told when looking for the bulbs to do the job our selves. Of course you are not going to ground a vehicle over the side light bulb, this is probably why you se so many DF vehicles, especially ones used by RDF, going around with defective lights.

But sorry this is going way off topic.

DF teaches military skills. I would have thought that outside the DF theses skills would be recognised by other armies as RGJ said.

BUt where else would you expect them to be recognised?

The CD is a civilian organisation teaching civilian skills. The DF would not recognise their skills so why should DF personnel expect civvi skills thaught by the military be recognised without the civvi test being carried out?

And I know the driving tests are recognised but thats a different story.

That's correct, Rex - no longer taught on the Driving Modules

I remember when I was doing my Module 2 Driving Course, there was a section on
it dedicated to Motor Vehicle Technology

I had a bugger of a time trying to remember the four cycles of the four cycle engine
        - of course as well you know these are Induction - Compression - Ignition - Exhaust

The unit has a very nice jig which was made years ago by one of the unit instructors
        - it's basically a car engine with the pistons driven by tmeans of an electric motor
        - a useful training aid

Luchi has a funnier way of remembering it which was passed down from a former
instructor (can't remember what it is, though)

Students now have it handy !!!

I have no disagreement with you RE: dashboard lights, the veh has to go off the
        road for this

But daft stuff like a light bulb ?

I work in an environment where at one stage, I could routinely be ordering $100,000
worth of parts at a time to get a maintenance completed on a tool
Luchi works in a similar enough environment with regards to maintenance

Another time, we had a 4 x 2 off the road for essentially needing a jubilee clip on
a fluid pipe - we didn't get it back for a month...

Ask Luchi about the time he was asked to drive a defective TCV and threatened
with a charge when he refused....
"Well, stone me! We've had cocaine, bribery and Arsenal scoring two goals at home. But just when you thought there were truly no surprises left in football, Vinnie Jones turns out to be an international player!" (Jimmy Greaves)!"

Unfortunately for the RDF the vehicles of operational units were always given priority at busy times when I was in Tpt workshops CBB, with the shortage of fitters at the time it meant very long waits for some vehicles, although the parts supply situation didn't help

don't you run a system like 'A jobs' and 'B jobs'?

an 'A job' would be a job where the crew can easily make the repair good - basically anything not solely in the remit of the REME mechanics (a 'B job') which can be addressed - if it means the crew unscrewing a light cluster with a screwdriver to change a bulb then so be it - so long as the NCO overseeing the work is happy that it's not going to cause more bad than good.

usually the MT will take a vehicle in for inspection and send it back to us with a whole list of 'A jobs' for us to do.

it just seems daft having to take a vehicle out of action for so long for simple jobs to be completed by the 'right people'.

                  common sense should prevail.

TD why the confusion..........................or have you never seen the actions that accompany the words?

RGJ of course we do but you must realise we are talking about RDF.

o right, soz Luchi - i guess it adds an extra fudge factor and the MT / LAD won't be open in the evenings or at weekends.

i don't know what we do in that respect, maybe some of the TA lads can enlighten us?

                        its a local thing,

and not even everyone in one location.

but in fairness one should add, unlike in a pdf unit, there is no one ringing up to find out whats happening. the w/s sees a vehicle come in but have no personal interest in getting it back out as they don't know any of the rdf lads that may need it.

looking back to post 1 you will notice the cd do not offer a basic driving course for any vehicle class.

If you want to be a CD driver you need to fork out your hard earned cash for the privelage. I an sure there is many a CD member asking if the DF can do it why can't I.

Also was talking to the lad that does our manual handling, he reckons that all medic, H&S and fire service courses taught in the DF are recognised externally.

Its a matter of being taught by the right instructor.
