  • Drivers Course

    Lads,

I've got a driver's course coming up, and I was wondering what's generally involved with it?

Is it just 1st Line maintenance, convoy drills, and knowing how to fill in the paperwork?

Providing it doesn't compromise OPSEC, I'd appreciate the heads up.

    Cheers chaps!

The majority of the course is taken up doing rolls

    Breakfast rolls

    more breakfast rolls

    and all day breakfast rolls

you do drive from one location to another

    namely breakfast roll shops
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.

          Yeah mate, RDF driving course.

I did have a BA driving permit, think it was called FM100; can't remember exactly. Not transferrable into the DF unfortunately.

Can't speak on behalf of the PDF and what they do.

No chance! you could be an Artic driver on your civvi license, but if you don't have the AF154 (Army Driving Permit) you can't go near the wheel of an Army vehicle.
The driving course leads to both Civilian and Army licenses, and for that reason it is a course that people would sell their mother to get. Unfortunately courses are not run continuously, and are often given to the chosen few as reward for asses well kissed

we also use 'Military Driving Permits' (FMT600) but every soldier is trained to drive and put on civvie driving lessons to pass their civvie test, then they get the appropriate permit for each military vehicle they encounter upon completing the relative conversion / familiarisation.

Our lot are the same, the Army driving course has nothing to do with civvie street and nothing transfers over either way. YOu could drive lorries all day in civvie street and have to be re-trained agian if you drive lorries for the Army. Given that most Americans leave to drive about age 16, a driving license for a car here is a moot point.

OK S&S, since you have some form of driving licence you should be on the Mod 2A Driving course.

Death by lecture Part 2: Health and safety
                    Practical driving 2: Trailer training
Death by lecture part 3: Loading and unloading
Practical driving 3: Military routes and garages that supply breakfast rolls.
Death by lecture 4: Traffic accident proceedure
Practical driving 4: MIlitary routes and shops with Deli counters.
Death by lecture 5: PLaces that serve the best coffee.
Death by lecture 6: Off road safety breif
Practical driving 6: Off road driving
Test 1: Written to see if you were awake during the lectures
                    Test 2: Practical driving.
Without supplies no army is brave.

I remember my tester sitting into the nissan beside me.

Examiner: "Ah I see you have a driving licence. How many years are you driving?"

                      Me: " Over 8 years "

Examiner: "Excellent, proceed out the gate and into the city centre."

At this point he zips up his folder, puts it away and goes to sleep in the seat.

After a few half awake instructions to me around the route we arrive back.

Examiner: " Talk to me. How would you have assessed yourself?"

Me: " Ehhm, I could have stopped a bit further away from the car in front at lights. Maybe a bit wider on the turns."

Examiner: " Very well". Proceeds to write a few remarks, tells me I passed and asks me to send on the next victim.
"The Question is not: how far you will take this? The Question is do you possess the constitution to go as far as is needed?"

RGJ - your comment was made well before anyone clarified who gets army licences. I'm curious as to where you were going with it. Yet another "in the BA we do it this way" I suspect.

                          Oh lighten up........

In this day with most people owning of having regular access to a car I see no reason why ALL DF personel are not sent on driving courses.

Neither do I Luchi, it astounds me that only some are sent on driving courses.

The situation is so vastly improved from a few years ago it is nearly unrecognizable.
