    1. What uniform is that? - I recognise the aigellette (?) of the Presidential Aide de Camp and the Cav unit flash but the uniform is new to me. All the motorcyclists seem to be wearing a varient of it.

    2. What happened to Presidential Blue on the bikes?

New Cav Presedential escort uniform. Its been in for a couple of months now.Bike changed too.Not sure what model it is now but they obviously didnt stick with the blue.
"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

Yeah the bikes went from the blue Honda Deauvilles which were 650cc up to the new green Deauvilles which are 700cc. Plus the new improved uniforms.

I assume it is armoured (or whatever the terminology is)

They could be wearing it under the uniform either.

The DPM bike gear is armoured (ie padded) in places (not bullet proof type armoured but I think it is kevlar), not sure about this stuff.

I had actually looked at these pics earlier and not noticed the new uniform, it looks like a variation on the band uniform.

Is it normal for captain of the escort to wear the aigellette (?).?

As kermit says the "Presidental Escort of Honour" is (always) provided by 2 Cav Sqn with (I think) 29bikes.

To answer some questions, though some have already answered, the motorcycle escort of Honour is provided by 2 Cav Sqn, based in Cathal Brugha. They use since last year Honda NT700V Deauvilles, in a special green, complete with the FF badge behind the windscreen, and a mini flagpole on each bike for the Cav Pennant.

The Motorcyclists in the escort wear a protective undersuit, which has:
Knox CE proofed or equivalent protectors at shoulders, back, elbows, hip and knee.
All impact protectors, as supplied, shall be approved to EN 1621-1/97 and comply to P.P.E.
                  directive 89/686/EEC.
Suprotect Foam or equivalent foam at the hips.

They also wear Arai Chaser helmets (other ranks) with the Officers wearing BMW system 5 (flip up) helmets. The officers helmet is also fitted with a headset, similar to the garda type, with a cable from the helmet plugging into the Bike mounded radio, when fitted.
Depending on the VIP being escorted, the EOH consists of either a Lieutenants escort, of 18 all ranks, or a Captains escort, of 29 all ranks.

The tunic is new, and was only introduced last year, when the New Deauvilles arrived. The main difference is a practical collar. Open collars and motorcycles do not go well. I have yet to see a decent photo of the uniform without the motorcyclist on the bike. A big change from the old overcoat and jodphurs.

Correct, Dev, 29 motorcycle escort for the President, 18 motorcycle
escort for visiting dignitaries, such as ambassadors, etc

I vaguely remember a tender going out for a new Kevlar outfit
which could be worn UNDER that uniform

The green motorcycles have been in a few months now - still
a Honda Deauville, but that's the extent of my knowledge on
them - Goldie seems to be the resident "bike porn" expert here

easy Claim the title when you have one,

I've seen it recently and it is a handsome machine.

As for the DPM armour suits. I would reckon that there is junior version for wear under the Formal wear otherwise it would be contradictory trying to enforce the use of it in any case.

Common Mistake.. the army was all infantry until the inception of the Cavalry Corps in 1924 I think it was, sometime after the death of Gen. Collins. Had to be formed to stop the gravel agitators having any more leaders killed.

I never knew the Officer's helmet had comms built into it-

who is in comms with GF?

I remember being the clothing committee when the Cav dispensed with the traditional collar (shirt and tie)

and went for the new look- the explanation we were given was that 58% of the syllabus on

the Troopers course was taken up with teaching them how to knot their tie.

The Cav didnt kill Michael Collins- however in his famous speech at Ballsbridge he commented on them - Sorry to have to use wiki for this quote:

"the Cavalary are now and will always be the smelliest bunch of hairy knuckle Soldiers"

                              Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
                              The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
                              Are full of passionate intensity.
