  • Irish Royal Marine Commando joining PDF ?

    Hi,

I'm new to this board and I just have some questions about joining or transferring to the Irish PDF from the royal marines.
I'm 100% Irish I just joined the marines to gain operational experience and for the challange.I'm comeing close to the end of my time in the marines now and I would like to serve in the Army with an aim to joining the ARW.
I was just wondering what the process of changing would be like and how long it usually takes from application to acception into the PDF.

Any info from anyone that has experienced any of this or knows anything that would help would be greatly apppreciated .

    Thanks in advance,

    Welcome to IMO bootneck.

With regard to your citizenship, it doesn't matter as the DF doesn't discriminate with regard to EU nationals.

Unfortually their is no way of transferring to/from the Defence Forces (as you can we the Australian and NZ militaries).

Therefore you would have to apply for either general service recruitment or a cadetship (and start from scratch as a recruit or cadet), unfortually there is a recruitment (and promotion)ban here at the moment but the DF recently got the go ahead to take on some people, unfortually for you both these competitions are now closed.

Importantly you must be under 28 for a cadetship and 25 for a recruit.

Had a bloke in my Unit from before my time who I believe was a member of the RMC before joining the DF. Hedgie would more than likely know him.

Anyway, he had to go through Recruit Training just like any civvie would, there was no way to transfer across.

The Navy age limit is 27. I know of a few lads who joined the Navy did recruits and within 16 months were in the Wing and were in similar circumstance to you. (serving in another Countries Military)

Do they not alow you another two years beyond the age limit if you have previous service? i.e. if someone is 27 they may still be allowed to join or has this been done away with?

Previous service in the Irish Defence forces perhaps.

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

I really dont know if Im going to stay in or not,my heads all over the place to be honest.
The spec I want to do has a 2 year waiting list before I can start it (its anti tanks ) and I really cant see myself waiting for that.

Close protection would be something else Im interested in but the Rangers would put the iceing on the cake for me.

If your set on SF why not go for SF selection for SAS/SBS?

Wouldn't be guaranteed even after you had gone back through the basics.

I have no doubt you are well up for it but it would be tow years after you had joined here which is now a minimum of another 12months away even if you did get in.

Probably better off staying put as at least your still in a job in the sime time scale as outlined above.

You said your were coming to the end of your time in the Corp?

The contract terms are for 18 years or till 40 years of age. The minimum time you must serve is 3.5 years from date of passing out as a Marine.

At 27 looking to join the Irish DF is possibly too late. Again, if your unhappy about waiting 2 years for a heavy weapons specialisation and your interested in SF training why not give the Joint Services SF selection a go? Plenty of Operational experience in that line of work I'd say!

There is no longer age extensions for recruitment (and there hasn't been for a number of years).

i know this may be a fate worse than death for some Royal Marines - but why not transfer into an Infantry battalion in the British Army?

each Battalion runs an Anti-Tanks cadre at least once a year, sometimes twice and i've never ever known of a waiting list. i was thrown onto my Anti-Tanks course just 4 months after joining battalion and i know some FNG's in 2RIFLES who did the same.

we had a couple of Bootnecks join us over the years during my time as a Green Jacket.

consider it an option mate if that's what you want - or like Zulu said if you want SF - go SBS.

Im aware of the lengh of my contract mate

If I wanted to go sf in uk I would have tried it already, and I have plenty of operational experience and Im also currently on operations.
Part of the lure to the rangers is I would be able to serve at home not just because it was special forces.

                              Thanks anyway,
