  • Too Old for RDF?

OK, I know this is probably irrelevant at the moment with the recruitment freeze and all but I'd appreciate some feedback anyway- is 33 too old to consider joining the RDF?

With out being agist apart from anythin else I think it would be etremely difficult for anyone older than mid twenties starting out.

Apart from the physical there is the social aspect. You would be trying to fit into 17-21 year old group with a 20-25 yera old as a superior.

Not impossible but I do think it would be very difficult.

If you can handle a 21 year old corporal being in charge of you then no. We had a guy a few years back that joined when he was 34. He stuck with it for a few years before family commitments took over.

Whats age got to do with it?

They're either competent in the job or not. Simples.

Both luchi and Infy make very valid points. The only way I have seen it work (and very sucessfully) is when about 5 or 6 mates of that age join together.
"Fellow-soldiers of the Irish Republican Army, I have just received a communication from Commandant Pearse calling on us to surrender and you will agree with me that this is the hardest task we have been called upon to perform during this eventful week, but we came into this fight for Irish Independence in obedience to the commands of our higher officers and now in obedience to their wishes we must surrender. I know you would, like myself, prefer to be with our comrades who have already fallen in the fight - we, too, should rather die in this glorious struggle than submit to the enemy." Volunteer Captain Patrick Holahan to 58 of his men at North Brunswick Street, the last group of the Four Courts Garrison to surrender, Sunday 30 April 1916.

a guy joined our neighboring unit when he was 30. he gets on grand and better than some of the others
I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

i joined when i was 31, have to admit the age gap with the others was an issue at times and the difference in our attitudes took some getting used to. Was just one reason of many i walked...

But if you want it enough then go for it
              Anyone need a spleen ?

I totally agree but attitudes are not just one way.

How are the 17 year lads going to react?
Do you want to be training with somene yo ufeel should be in the pub with your dad?

Your recruit pln has to jel as one.

35 is the limit. If you want it go for it!
It is only by contemplation of the incompetent that we can appreciate the difficulties and accomplishments of the competent.

                    Pretty sure it's 34, not 35

                      Damn damn damn

                      I was thinking of putting my name down for when recruitment opened up;

An ex Snr NCO- loads of weapons courses - loads of other guichi course

surely the likes of me should have been head hunted ( and not in that way )

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***

Stop dealing in fictional units. The last time I saw a recruit Pln was 2007. All thats happening now is sub units are attesting 1s and 2s.

If you were a Sgt or above, the extension is to 45.
and you get to keep your PDF rank.

RDF units wouldn't take a present of you.. you know far too much and have the ability to show those in higher and equal ranks up.

                              Your every RDF officers nightmare.
