  • Defence in the next election?

With the upcoming elections fast approaching what role will defence
    play in party pledges?

Was wondering what the main parties (FF, FG, SF, Greens, Labour) views are
concerning the defence forces & defence strategy.

Although it will have little effect for the general populus for the
members on this party manifestos could mean more or less funding,
ending of moritorium, upgrade of equipment or even a re-organisation
of certain aspects of Navy, Air Corp, PDF & RDF..
    Life's short, party naked :-)

There'll be nothing except the usual bland promise to keep the numbers at previously set levels.

      honestly...it will feature FĂșck all!
even before an board snip our military was massively underfunded in comparison to other simular sized EU countrys

Fixing potholes and getting planning permission for your "constituents" is what gets votes

SF will have defence in their policy... mostly about how we should stop co-operating with the UK....

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

And integrate the IRA into the PDF/RDF, no doubt.
'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
          Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

Seriously though, I plan on asking a few defence related questions when the campaigners come a knockin'
I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

I plan to catch them with "do you think we should continue spending on defence when the economy is in a shite state?"
"what is the point of buying new boats for the Navy?"

Ask them negatively, to see if they (a) will agree with what they think is your point of view and (b) to see if they know anything about defence policy.

That's the main one for me GF. I know (more than likely) what I'll hear but still, I'll ask.

It only works if they don't already know your interests though, so park the tank around back when they call, and hide all the spent casings......

Jobs for the boys and fixin' the potholes is what these guys care about . . . not providing enough Naval vessels to ensure our waters aren't fished out or that drugs aren't coming on to the streets, or providing a soldier with modern equipment that could save his life overseas or at home.

This year's donkey race'll be all about the economy and people's wonderful plans to fix it anyway.
If at first you don't succeed, then call in an airstrike.
