  • Which Barracks Should Close Next? (Mark 2)

    The poll on this thread http://forum.irishmilitaryonline.com...ad.php?t=12918 is now out of date so lets start a new one.

    Given the economic situation, the downsizing of the PDF (to 10,000) and the need to reduce costs within the DF, should the DF be proactive and lead by example by closing more barracks?

    Outline your reasons (within what is in the public domain already)!

    Cathal Brugha Bks, South Dublin
    17.65%

    McKee Bks, North Dublin

    My own belief:

    Kickham - move personnel to Sarsfield/Stephens
    Dun Ui Neill - move personnel to Finner/Custume/Columb

    Possibly Columb - move personnel to Dun Ui Mhaoiliosa/Custume
    Possibly Stephens - move personnel to Curragh/Collins
    Possibly Aiken - move personnel to Gormanston (make it harder to close as it is a strategic asset)

      Should you not consider putting in an option-

      None- as the DF has laready borne the brunt of Barrack Closures.

      Or words to that effect
      Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
      Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
      The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
      The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
      The best lack all conviction, while the worst
      Are full of passionate intensity.

        No.We are already overstreched as it is.Too many split units.Consolidating is gonna become even more neccessary if the new CS4 comes in.

        "Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

            As stated in the VFM report on lands, Gormonston is a strategic location due to both the air-to-ground and AD range.

            However, I raised this before (http://forum.irishmilitaryonline.com...hp/t-5457.html & http://forum.irishmilitaryonline.com...9&postcount=32) what about D13 as a possible alternative (Galley Head in Co.Cork)?

            It is an existing naval range with a higher altitute restriction that Gormonston. Having said that there is a lighthouse, golf course & civilian accomodiation in the area. But maybe a purchase of a small amount of land and it could be a runner?

            The danger area is the red area on this map, west of Cork: http://www.ihpa.ie/images/stories/ih...n_airspace.jpg

              I'm not sure how much space a AD shoot needs but it's probably no use. Also given the area and high levels of NIMBY-ism already prevalent...

                Never mind barracks Tralee has shocking facilities and should no longer be used, same for Bere Island.

                  what a lot of people forget is that once we abandon these things it is extremely difficult to get them back
                  "Are they trying to shoot down the other drone? "

                  "No, they're trying to fly the tank"

                              Why isn't tralee on this poll?

                              Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.
