A Happy Saint Patricks Day to all from a somewhat less than green Ghazni. No beer, no good food, I told the CO we should fire off some green flares but he didn't seem to think that was such a good idea. Best wishes on the day to all the Irish out there serving away from home and family, hoist a pint in their honour.
Beannachtai na feile Padraig duit agus faugh a ballagh!!!!
'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night. http://www.salamanderoasis.org/poems...nnis/luck.html
"Well, stone me! We've had cocaine, bribery and Arsenal scoring two goals at home. But just when you thought there were truly no surprises left in football, Vinnie Jones turns out to be an international player!" (Jimmy Greaves)!"
I spent mine in Mullingar, and was well impressed with the parade, 4 and 54 Regiments had a decent turn out, which was much different to the usual colour party job that Dublin Gets
But there's no danger
It's a professional career
Though it could be arranged
With just a word in Mr. Churchill's ear
If you're out of luck you're out of work
We could send you to johannesburg.

Yep, I saw on the news that 4 FAR had a decent turnout of kit in the Mullingar parade

The powers that be in Columb barracks have a policy of keeping the army involved with local community hence involvement in parade, open days, lectures in barracks etc.
I didnt get any, but they had a PO Platoon beating out the step on the riot shields, they had a fair bit of kit out, LTAVs, 25's 105's 120's 81's and some trucks done up as gyms, mg positions etc, very impressive turn out!(for yokelstongue

I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.
In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.
You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.
=RoyalGreenJacket;365625]thought i'd bump this thread instead of start another new one.
Sgt McGready of 1 Royal Irish escorts Shamrock from Belfast to Tern Hill for this weekends St Patricks Day activities.
Dear RGJ: Happy St. Patricks Day....... and congratulations on your 6,000th post .!!!! And how lovely that it should be on this wonderful subject. Like you, I will always remember how our own dear Queen Mum used to make such an effort for us. I am overcome with emotion when I think of it all. Who is doing the Shamrock this year- Camilla, I hope.

Well lads, this will be a better Paddys Day than the last one...safely home, and will be appropriately celebrating with expat mates and hoisting a glass to our colleagues still "over there". Unfortunatley, there will be no official Army celebrations here, that tends to be more of a East Coast thing, NYC, Boston, etc.
