    NEW GENERAL OFFICER COMMANDING 2nd EASTERN BRIGADE APPOINTED

    The Defence Forces wishes to announce that Colonel Gerard McNamara has been promoted to the rank of Brigadier General and has been appointed General Officer Commanding 2nd Eastern Brigade. He replaces Brigadier General Edward Heskin who has retired.

    Brigadier General McNamara, a native of Galway was commissioned in September 1965. Prior to his current appointment in Dublin, he served in the 4th Western Brigade, the Military College, Curragh and most recently in Defence Forces Headquarters where he held the appointment of Director of Operations.

    In addition to his home appointments Brigadier General McNamara has extensive overseas service. He served in UNFICYP (Cyprus) in 1969. In 1982 and 1986 he served with UNIFIL in Lebanon and in 1996 he served as Officer Commanding 79th Infantry Battalion in UNIFIL. He served as a military observer on the Iran / Iraq border (UNIIMOG) in 1989/90 and with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO) in the Middle East from 1979 to 1981.

    Brigadier General McNamara is married to Rita. They live in Galway. They have two sons and two daughters.

      I' m open to correction, but aren't both his two daughters Captains in the PDF, both in 2 E Bde?

                Smity, I don' t think Brig Gen Heskin has retired, I think he' s actually now Maj Gen - i.e; promoted...
