Officer who reads the proclamation on 1916 comemoration.

I am wondering if any one you guys know how the officer who reads the proclamation on the 1916 comemoration is selected. It would be a great thing to have done and as such I would imagine there would be alot of interested people.

This year it is a Lt and last year it was a Capt as far as i remember.

Any one any insight into this?

Far as I know it's a naval Lt which is the equivalent of an army Capt.

Yep, from what I've seen to date, it has always been a Capt (Army)

Why do the Cav wear lanyards on the right shoulder?

I assume the same reason the PAs do..... because it is there to actually secure a weapon if necessary - cav and PAs would be armed with pistols in the past.

Blanco you speak of can be green as well as white, theres were white, 3t pattern, some white some the original Khaki painted white.But mostly white which was just boiled white to keep it clean.Most of it came out of Clonmel.

Blanco is the stuff national service men in the UK put on webbing to give it a green appearance..we just painted it green,some interesting links attached about the product and how and when it was used.

The difference is the blancoe is a dye...the paint flakes during prolonged use.

Blancoe if I remember correctly is a product name as opposed to what it does.

We had whitewashed ceremonial rifle straps, which always flaked off, for the FN until they brought in some actual white straps (polyester) and items of white webbing, which were much easier to use and maintain.

The white web shoulder straps?

Unusual in themselves as would have had to be Blancoed white as it would be unusual for anything other that belts or holsters to be white webbing.

I have a '37 pattern belt in my attic that is white canvas web but it was more usual to have had to 'whiten' shoulder straps as these were an integral part of the normal '37' pattern webbing..which was khaki naturally

We persevered with web slings and belts as recruits and had them gleaming and on the day we passed out we were handed the polyester slings and belts...

I'd say its the light reflecting off the shoe as the other one seems fine.


Interesting to note the Officer who was Berties ADC and Cowens is now Kennys, bit unusual given they normally change with the Taoiseach of the day.

Charlie Haughey being the only one to have a Naval ADC.
