I'd give them a chance and see what happens. Mind you that applies to everybody. There are plenty of PDF types I wouldn't cross the road with.

I agree completely, dont get me wrong there are plenty of competent, even a few excellent soldiers in my and other reserve units, but theres a whole lot of fusterclucks who shouldnt be aloud on the range never mind ops.

I think it'd be an interesting project for the army to form a reserve company in each bde using strict qualification standards to see if we have high enough percentages of useful personnel to actually send overseas (notwithstanding the obvious need for additional preparation training).

Given the RDF's current state I wouldn't blame any PDF member from being nervous about serving alongside an RDF person on an overseas mission.

Someone once said that the only difference between a soldier & a civilian is training. RDF don't get enough of it.

Well since were presumably talking about people in technical roles with relevant qualifications I dont see how that applies.

                Come Quickly,

If you're talking about people in technical roles with relevant qualifications, why bother sending over RDF at all- send over any old IT guy, doctor, electrician etc. Hell, the ESB make a fortune from sending people everywhere in the world, the army could hire them.

GPs were sent to the Lebanon for many years. RDF docotrs are going over now; the only difference is giving preference to those who are members of the RDF.

If you're talking about a military situation, with danger of combat, you need people with combat training.

I don't go trying to install a central heating system in my home, and my plumber doesn't offer to represent me in court.

For general service overseas there are abundant members of PDF available.
For specialist roles the RDF have many professionals with some military training. The shortfall in some PDF rolls (Doctors, Engineers, Sparks,. etc.) as well as not having to spend as much time bringing up to speed on military procedure makes it a good idea to recruit specialists from the RDF.

Because , apart fom the doctors, the specialists are also infantry qualified. Send a civvy and you need to send extra riflemen to defend him.

GPs were sent to the Lebanon for many years.

This is the second time I've seen this one on this board. So far as I know every Doctor sent to Lebanon was a member of the Medical Corps. Can anybody actually name a Doctor who served as a civvy in Lebanon?

Give us the training required and the equipment and we'll go. Most units have members who are serious about their soldiering..and these guys should at least be given the opertunity to try out for the mission.........I can see alot of the Corps units being called on to provide the skills nessacacry.

Without actually being called to go overseas why not use the reserve to take the pressure off the units at home who will be short bodies.Afterall the DF numbers have been depleted without a reduction in commitments so why not use the reserves for their intended purpose ...to re inforce the PDF

I think that the RDF should a given an oppertunity to serve overseas if the following are taken into consideration,

                        Qualificaion
                        Motivation
                        Training
                        Fitness
                        Medical
Personal Circumstances ( Can your partner cope and deal with family crisis without you) 6 Months is a long time.

Basically the same critera that is required of the PDF.

Once having voluntered for overseas service I think that RDF personnel should be given the oppertunity to aquire the same skill levels as PDF personnel of approprite rank, but it is easy to train a 3 star in Inf Pte but it will take alot longer to train a Inf Pln Sgt or equivelant in corps Units. Based on this criterea the first trips would be mostly be made by RDF Cpls and Ptes but once the principle of RDF serving Overseas is estabilished Darwins Theory of Natural Selection comes into play. The RDF must realise the following, overseas service is

                        Working Hours (24 x 7)
                        Boring (same shit different day)
Dangerous ( you may be shot at)
                        Glamour ( there is'nt any)
                        The Shits (enough said)
                        Sun Tan (Free)
Counting down the days to Chalk One (everyone does)

If the regulations change good luck to any member of the RDF who is selected for overseas service.
