    • I'd say the Ukranian Army would find a use for the 18 pounders and 25 pounders if they were given them with enough ammo.
'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'

There was a photo in 2014 of a Ukrainian using a water cooled maxim style gun

If it still sends rounds down range, why not!

          • Saw a clip just today of the same gun, being used in the anti-drone role.
Its a water cooled machine gun.
Easy to forget the HMG is from the same era.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

It's interesting seeing the old style anti aircraft guns being reupped for drone defence

I'd imagine the sustained fire capability of water cooled guns would be an asset in certain circumstances

                    • Interesting article on page 30 of DF Review 2022
                      https://www.military.ie/en/members-a...22-digital.pdf

one think I found interesting was a radar like Giraffe 4A can act as an AD radar, counter battery radar while having good range

                          Of Giraffe?

the 6x6 mounted one was the Giraffe 40

the current track mounted one is the Giraffe Mk IV

                          • None of the giraffe models we use can be used for counter battery

acquiring LCMR for counter battery fire Is a no brainer they cost less than a million a piece and the latest version can even acquire drones

                            • Counter battery does not rely on counter battery radar. The drones mentioned can provide the necessary targeting information. Key for counter battery is a longer range weapon than you opponent. Even back in WWII the Germans main field gun was the 105mm which they used for fire support. Their 150mm was tasked with counter battery, most other nations were similar. What you do not want is your counter-battery battery getting knocked our by the other sides battery.

As the chances of us deploying the 105'sin an armed conflict is null if we did have spare cash better for us to gain an anti-drome system that we could deploy.

the point the author was making is that a modern radar like the Giraffe 4A is multi-role

it can conduct air surveillance (and defence by queueing weapons), that includes ability to detect small drones at a decent range and can be used as a counter-battery radar (to detect incoming and calculate the firing location).

the author also made the point at the presentation that it is also cheaper than some of the bespoken systems (eg COBRA)

                                https://www.saab.com/products/giraffe-4a

I’m guessing is that if a Bde was deployed with a full FAR (including AD Bty), then the AD Bty with Giraffe 4A could multitask (therefore reducing the need for bespoken CB radars). He didn’t say that drones wouldn’t be needed as well.

I’d make the point that (in a conventional fight) if your artillery is on a gun line then it is likely going to be fired on.

which is possibly why he alway makes the point about for example 105mm’s on HUMVEE type vehicles
